The Imo State Police Command has dismissed as false a viral social media report alleging that suspected herdsmen set a student hostel ablaze in Nekede, Owerri, trapping more than 80 students inside.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, described the Facebook post as misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
The command said no such incident occurred in Nekede and urged the public to disregard the report, warning against the spread of unverified information capable of inciting fear, panic and public disorder.
It advised residents to verify the authenticity of information through credible and official sources before sharing it on social media or other platforms.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, assuring residents that the command would continue to provide timely and accurate information on matters relating to public safety.
