As part of the efforts to improve access to safely managed water, sanitation, and hygiene for the residents, Imo State Government has assured the United States Agency For International Development (USAID)/Mercy Corps of the state’s unwavering support for the Small Town Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (ST-WASH) projects.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Ozo Obinna Ogwuegbu gave the assurance recently in a quarterly review meeting on the Small Town Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (ST-WASH) activities. The meeting, held in Owerri with key stakeholders from Imo, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Abia, and Delta States, aimed at evaluating the progress made so far by Mercy Corps and subsequent strategies that would be adopted.
The Commissioner emphasized the governments commitment to continue to collaborate with Mercy Corps and other stakeholders to ensure the ST-WASH projects meet the program’s objectives, and adhere to the requisite standards. Ogwuegbu expressed optimism about the project’s positive impact, aligning it with Governor Hope Uzodimma’s Shared Prosperity Agenda to improve potable water supply access across the state.
In his own contribution, Country Director of Mercy Corps, Mr. Ndubuisi Emeka Anyanwu, highlighted that the review meeting was a significant platform to evaluate past achievements and plan future endeavors. He encouraged all participating states to maintain synergy for the successful implementation of ST-WASH activities, reiterating the USAID consultant – Mercy Corps’ dedication towards improving water and sanitation services in semi-urban areas.
The meeting concluded with stakeholders having renewed determination to advance the ST-WASH program, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
It should be noted that, in Imo State, the ST-WASH activities are being implemented in Egbeada and Otamiri axes of Owerri.
