The Vice Chairman of Umuahia North Traditional Rulers Council, HRH, Eze Philip Kachie Ukegbu has called for the strengthening of Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and the Judiciary, adding that if these two institutions are gotten right, it will enhance efficient and effective 2027 general elections.

The traditional ruler, who is the Enyi 1 of Afaraukwu, Ibeku, Umuahia who spoke to our reporter in his palace during the new yam festival, said during the last general elections, the way and manner the presidential results was hurriedly announced was shocking to many.

“The way we elect our leaders should be firm, the constitution should be respected and I appeal that INEC should be strengthened and the Judiciary should be independent in discharging their responsibilities.

He frowned at what is happening in the larger society and Southeast, noting that the high insecurity, kidnapping, lack of employment, poverty, hunger, human trafficking immorality, cybercrime among others should be a source of concern to all and should be checkmated.

He disclosed that some states in Southeast have become a killing field, he appealed to the federal government to free Mazi Nnamdi kanu so that peace can return to the zone.

The traditional ruler commended Governor Alex Otti’ for his developmental strides, adding that God has visited Abia.

“Otti’s administration is doing well, if you enter Abia now you will appreciate what the governor is doing, handling so many projects at the same time. Criticism is good but it should be constructive, praise a man for what he is doing right then criticize him rightly” Eze Ukegbu stated.

He thanked the governor for increasing the stipends of Ezes in the state but further appeal to the governor to enhance the stipends given to traditional rulers of Umuahia .He  alsonoted that because they are in the state capital, government has taken majority of their lands that they no longer have where to expand or farm .

The monarch hinted that new yam festival is one of the mostly celebrated festival in Igbo land that bring their children far and near back home.

He regretted that because they are in the capital they no longer have where to farm and majority buy yam to celebrate the new yam festival. He however encouraged his subjects to look for space to farm no matter how small even if  farmingwith bags in their various compounds. He also encouraged that cooperative society should be formed where communities come together buy land elsewhere and cultivate yam.

The traditional ruler frowned at the unruly behaviour of some of the youths while celebrating.

“Some of our youths have left our culture and indulged themselves in evil, some during festivals carry dangerous weapon harassing drivers and commuters, I am begging the youths to leave this dangerous paths that leads to untimely death”.
