Abia community, Ibekuaccient Kingdom, Umuahia, Abia state is set to revive 53 years old cultural festival known as ‘Izo Ahia Ibeku” last celebrated in 1972.
Stating that they have always used culture in the past to checkmate crime.
Speaking at Ibeku Egwu Asaa village square, Isieke, Chief Benjamin Apugo popularly known as OparaIbeku with other prominent leaders of the community said that the people of Ibeku land long time ago used to celebrate the festival known as IzoAhiaIbeku and the festival dates back to the ancient times and was last celebrated 53 years ago in 1972 .
According to Apugo a respected son of the soil, the people of Ibeku have decided to revive that Culture again and sequel to this, it will be celebrated on the 24th of July, 2024.
He said, “recently the people took a bold decision to revive some of their forgotten cultural heritages and to strengthen existing ones like the popular Iriji,the new yam Festival .
Throwing more light, Apugo said Ibeku Ancient kingdom is one of the prominent clans that made up Umuahia North LGA of Abia State and are known for their rich cultural heritage and festivities .
He stressed that they have in the past, used culture to checkmate crime in the society among other benefits attached to the culture of their people.
Apugo further noted that the festival will be used to connect to their brothers and sisters who long ago migrated to other zones.
Adding that distant relations of Ibeku land and other eminent personalities will be invited to the event .
He disclosed that the event would hence forth be celebrated every 5 years for the sake of younger generation.
“The dressing of the festival shall be formal, there would be drumming and dancing, the importance of culture shall be emphasized”. Apugo added.
