For decades, the people of Umuezala Oboh, Osuoma autonomous community, in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State lived with the daily burden of water scarcity. Access to clean drinking water was a luxury, as residents trekked long distances to nearby streams or depended on private boreholes, often at considerable cost.
That long-standing challenge has now given way to hope, thanks to the generosity of Rev. Fr. Pius Obioma Nwagwu, SMMM, a Catholic priest of the Congregation of Son’s of Mary Mother of Mercy and a proud grandson of the community, who facilitated the construction of a solar-powered water project for his maternal people.
The life-changing project was made possible through the support of some of Fr. Nwagwu’s parishioners in Austria, where he is currently serving. The donors, Mr. Josef and Mrs. Monica Hermann, alongside Mr. Leopold and Mrs. Gabriele Maria Elisabeth Handelberger, funded the initiative as part of their commitment to improving lives beyond their borders.
The commissioning ceremony attracted community leaders, clergy, and residents who gathered to celebrate what many described as a new chapter for Umuezala Oboh.
Speaking at the event, the Rector of Seat of Wisdom Seminary, Owerri, Rev.Fr. Dr. Cajetan Ehiem, praised Fr. Nwagwu for remembering his roots and giving back to his maternal community. He said the successful execution of the project reflected the priest’s integrity, dedication, and hard work, qualities that earned him the confidence of his parishioners abroad.
He urged Fr. Nwagwu to remain steadfast in his service to God and humanity, praying that God would continue to bless and strengthen him. He also appealed to the beneficiaries to protect the facility, stressing that such a project required significant financial resources and deserved proper care and maintenance.
In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Pius Nwagwu revealed that the water project was dedicated to the memory of his late mother, Nneoma Scholastica Ngozi Nwagwu, whose life of love and sacrifice inspired the initiative. He called on the community to establish a maintenance committee that would safeguard the facility and ensure it serves generations to come.
Responding on behalf of the community, Eze Udo IV of Osuoma , His Royal Highness Edmund Agim expressed heartfelt appreciation to the donors and Fr. Nwagwu for the invaluable gift. He assured them that the community, working with its vigilante security team, would protect the facility and ensure its sustainability.
Beyond providing clean water, the project symbolizes compassion, community service, and the impact an individual can make by remembering home. For the people of Umuezala Oboh, the solar-powered water scheme is more than an infrastructure project—it is a source of renewed hope, improved health, and a brighter future.
