A frontline football enthusiast and philanthropist, Hon. Chibuzor Umunnakwe, has called for concerted efforts at developing female football across the 27 Local Government Areas.
He insisted that giving female football its pride of place will further deepen the excellent templates established by the Imo State Governor, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 edition of the Okwelle Women Football competition held at the Okwelle Township Stadium, he said the giant strides of the governor in furtherance of the 3R programmes must be supported by philanthropist, corporate organizations and public spirited individuals.
Umunnakwe, who is also the General Manager of Imo Signage and Advertisement Agency (IMSAA) said he undertook to sponsoring female football because of its impact on them and the society at large.
According to him, “I am only making my little contribution to the development of the female child through football. Football is gradually becoming a very important career in the world just like other sports.
“This is the 4th edition of the female competition and each year I can’t explain the satisfaction I derive seeing these talented female footballers compete amongst themselves.
“I want to encourage them to continue to build themselves and make progress. I am happy that over the years some of them have been discovered and are progressing outside here. In no distant time these competition would have produced professional footballers representing Imo and Nigeria all over the world.
Umunnakwe called for philanthropist and corporate organizations to do more in establishing female football competitions so that Imo will become the backbone of female football in Nigeria.
The organizers of the competition led by Ordinand Bright Ekwebelem commended the Hon. Umunnakwe for keeping faith with his promises and described him as “God sent to develop female football in Okwelle.
Hon. Ekwebelem who is also the President of Okwelle Progressive said the Imo Signage boss is a progressive who has always supported activities aimed at uplifting the living standards and well-being of the people.
The highlight of the event was the handing over of the cup to the winners as well as appreciation of all the teams that participated.
