….As Eze Onyejiuwa Describes Iri-Ji as a Symbol of Igbo Identity
The ancient tradition of thanksgiving, harvest and communal unity took centre stage at the Civic Centre, Umuozu Ward, Nwangele Local Government Area, as His Royal Highness, Eze Okechukwu Onyejiuwa, Ohanyere III of Umuozu, led his people in celebrating the 2026 Iri-Ji Festival.
Speaking at the event, Eze Onyejiuwa described Iri-Ji as more than a cultural celebration, noting that it is a sacred period of thanksgiving to God Almighty for a bountiful harvest, peace and protection throughout the farming season.
_“Iri-Ji reminds us of who we are as Ndigbo. It is a time to give thanks, reconcile and renew our bond as one people. As we eat the new yam, we pray for greater prosperity, unity and progress in Umuozu Ward and Nwangele LGA at large,” he stated._
The Royal Father called on the youths to uphold the values of hard work, integrity and respect for Igbo culture and traditions. He also appealed to indigenes of Umuozu at home and in the diaspora to contribute meaningfully to the development of the community, particularly in education, agriculture and infrastructure.
He further urged the people to remain steadfast in love and unity and to continue praying for peace in Imo State and Nigeria.
Speaking at the celebration, the Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Amarachi Chyna Iwuanyanwu; the Executive Chairman of Nwangele LGA, Hon. Chief Paul Chijioke Duru, Ochiriozuo I of Umuozu; and Rt. Hon. Ugonna Ozuruigbo (OZB Communication), commended Eze Onyejiuwa for sustaining the cultural heritage of Umuozu and using the festival to promote unity and peaceful coexistence.
The festival, which signifies the end of the farming season and the commencement of harvest, brought together sons and daughters of Umuozu, in-laws, friends and well-wishers in a colourful celebration of Igbo culture, featuring music, dance and communal prayers.
Highlights of the celebration included cultural performances, masquerade displays, traditional dances, Okonko activities, and Akunaeche Enyi Igba Umuozu. Dignitaries and stakeholders also renewed their commitment to unity and the continued development of Umuozu under the leadership of its traditional rulers.
The event attracted traditional rulers and their Lolos, Eze’s Cabinets, Chiefs, Councillors, government officials, Umuozu men and women at home and abroad, dignitaries and other critical stakeholders.
