Wike given fresh warning over renewed tension in Rivers State

Former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), NyesomWike, has been given warning over renewed tension in the state.

In a fresh development, the Coalition of Minority and Ethnic Groups in Nigeria (COMEG) has urged Wike to respect the terms of a peace accord brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

The group’s leader, Dan Okwa, who held a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, said the recent targeting of Governor SiminalayiFubara’s allies – particularly the planned arraignment of Chief of Staff Edison Ehie for arson – undermines the spirit of the agreement and risks reigniting tensions in the state.

“We strongly believe the peace accord should not be one-sided,” Okwa said. “Our concern stems from the recent use of the judiciary to seemingly undermine the state governor.”

COMEG called on the federal government to withdraw all charges against Ehie and other Fubara associates, arguing that Governor Fubara has extended key positions to Wike’s supporters, and pursuing legal action against his camp disrupts the accord’s intended balance.

“Hounding them with the judiciary of federal institutions will only cause fresh provocations that make a mockery of the efforts that President Tinubu has put into restoring peace to that part of the country,” Okwa cautioned.

While acknowledging Fubara’s adherence to the accord, COMEG urged him and his team to maintain their restraint, expressing hope that Wike’s camp will eventually follow suit.

“We appeal to Governor Fubara and his camp to continue to abide by the terms of the accord in the belief that the Wike’s camp will come around. The country cannot afford a meltdown in Rivers State now and at any other time,” Okwa stated.

Two courts issue conflicting orders on arrest of GovFubara’s chief of staff over explosion at Rivers Assembly

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt and a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the nation’s capital have issued two conflicting orders on the arrest of the Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Ehie Edison over last year’s explosion at the state House of Assembly.

While the Rivers State High Court issued an order stopping the arrest of Edison by the police, the Federal High Court, Abuja, gave the police the go ahead to arrest Edison alongside others said to be at large.

The Port Harcourt court made the order following an ex parte application taken before it by Edison, who was a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly when the Assembly complex was bombed to foil an attempt by lawmakers loyal to ex-governor NyesomWike to impeach Fubara.

Ehie, in his application, urged the court to restrain the police or other security agencies “from arresting, detaining and harassing” him over the Assembly incident.

Justice SikaAprioku, after granting the order, adjourned till February 6 for hearing of the substantive application.

However, in a direct conflict with the Rivers High Court order, the Federal High Court in Abuja also on Wednesday granted the police an order to arrest Ehie over the Assembly explosion.

Justice EmekaNwite, who heard the ex parte application by the police, issued a warrant for the arrest of Ehie and five others.

In the ex parte application, the defendants were accused of conspiracy, arson, terrorism, attempted murder, and murder of a Superintendent of Police, BakoAgbashim, and five other police informants.

The ex parte application was predicated on sections 37, 113, 114, 84, and 184 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution as well as 32 of the Police Act 2020.

While granting the application, Justice Nwite held: “That the complainant/application’s application dated and filed 29th day of January 2024 is granted as prayed.

“That an order of this Honourable Court is hereby made issuing a Warrant of Arrest against Ehie, Bala, Benneth, Joseph, Oyagiri, and Chibuike (aka Rambo) fleeing Defendants in the case. “

Hoodlums kill Lagos police officer in Adamaw

A Mobile Police officer attached to the 43 PMF of the Lagos State Police Command was been murdered on New Year’s Day in Adamawa State.

The officer, identified as Inspector Richard Felix, was attacked at Sangamu Hotel, Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa by some men at about 12:10 a.m. on Monday.

The police in Jambutu were said to have raced to the scene of the incident, where the 46-year-old policeman was discovered with severe injuries on his chest, our correspondent reliably gathered.

The cop was rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Yola, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

“We learnt that some thugs attacked the policeman who was not in uniform. We did not know why he was attacked. When police officers in Jambutu got to the scene, they rushed him to the Specialist Hospital in Yola, but the doctor said be was brought in dead already,” a source told newsmen.

It was gathered that the body of Inspector Felix had been deposited at the mortuary for an autopsy.

Our correspondent reports that one person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The arrested suspect, who also sustained injuries during the incident, is said to be in hospital for medical attention.

The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Monday.

Nguroje said, “It’s true. We got the report; we rushed him (Inspector Felix) to the hospital. He was killed. One suspect was even arrested. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State CID for us to know who were the attackers, who were behind it and what prompted it. As soon as that is done, we will make sure the law takes its course.

“We condemn the incident in totality. The life of a policeman is equally the life of a Nigerian. So, we cannot in anyway fold our hands to allow somebody take the life of an officer, simply because he is a policeman or because they are thugs. Whatever it may take, the law must take its course.”

Asked to know why the Lagos cop was in Adamawa State, Nguroje replied: We’ll investigate. Already, somebody who has been attacked and killed can’t be asked questions. What we are doing now is that, the command has taken over investigations.

We have to communicate them officially (in Lagos) to let us know why he was in Adamawa. Was he on casual leave, annual leave, on special assignments or whatever? But right now, I cannot ascertain what brought him here. But actually, he is confirmed dead and the command is investigating the circumstances that led to his death.”

Tinubu rejects ‘cybercrimes haven’ name tag for Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday rejected the ‘cybercrimes haven’ name tag for Nigeria.

He said that such conclusions undermine majority of the citizens who maintain the principles of integrity and diligence.

The President decried mislabel of Nigeria as a nation with one of the highest prevalence of cybercrime and other forms of corrupt practices. He spoke through the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, at a public engagement on “Youth, Religion and the Fight against Corruption” and the launch of “Inter-Faith Manual and Fraud Risk Assessment Project” for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government, at the Yar’Adua Centre, in Abuja.

The event, organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is a multi-dimensional stakeholders’ involvement in the fight against economic and financial crimes.

The President regretted that over the years, the entire populace had been linked with internet crimes without statistical proof, a development he noted, was out of tune with the way of life of the typical Nigerian citizen.

A statement issued by Shettima Spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, quoted Tinubu as noting that on the contrary, Nigerians are meticulous, authentic citizens who have been making significant contributions to innumerable fields of endeavours around the world.

The statement reads: “Over the decades, Nigerians have been victims of mislabelling. Such gross misrepresentation fails to reflect the true essence of our diverse and resilient nation. The association of internet crimes with the entire Nigerian populace lacks statistical evidence and does not align with the sociology of everyday Nigerians.

“Our nation comprises hardworking, honest citizens who contribute significantly to various fields globally, from artificial intelligence to medicine. While we reject blanket stereotyping that undermines the majority upholding principles of integrity and diligence, we must face the fact that we function in an interconnected world where cybercrimes have evolved into a global phenomenon. This poses a threat not only to our nation, but to the entire world.”

In his speech titled: “Youth, religion and our battle against corruption: A call to action,” the President applauded the EFCC “for remaining a moral compass, persistently rousing the nation’s conscience.”

He said through its operations, the anti-graft commission has remained vocal in “telling the world that Nigeria is neither complicit nor complacent in confronting the menace of corruption”.

Underscoring the urgency of combating internet crimes and neutralising the threat caused by other forms of corruption head on, the President assured the anti-graft agency of the government’s support in its quest to combat these digital offenses.

“We must recognise that the Commission’s lawful efforts to bring fraudsters to book are imperative for the overall well-being of our society. The government is aware that our ambitious goal of eradicating internet offenses and corruption demands an atmosphere steeped in trust and integrity.”

The deputy speaker added that the committee would take into consideration the concerns of Nigerians and bequeath to the nation a constitution that would reflect the yearning of the people.

He added that the committee would also consider some important bills that failed to receive the needed attention in the last constitution review.

Kalu urged sponsors and promoters of the bills to ensure early and thorough advocacy on the bills.

“The Committee is fully aware of the concerns of Nigerians on the need to finalise and conclude discussions around Nigeria’s Constitution. I will like to state, however, that the nature of Nigeria’s Constitution and the history around how it was made and handed over to a new civilian government in 1999, makes it imperative for us to continually revisit the several provisions of the constitution and work towards accomplishing consensus on outstanding constitutional debates.”

Kalu highlighted the scope of reference of the committee to include the alteration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) and other Acts that are to be altered, in accordance with Section 8 and Section 9 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Others, he said, are receiving and considering any proposal, bills for the alteration of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which may be made or referred to by the Acts, and ensuring the alterations to the constitution are passed by the National Assembly and assented to by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Also, creating a forum for relevant stakeholders and members of the public to make their inputs to the constitution review process, to enact laws to improve the wellbeing and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

In addition, building a robust and collaborative relationship with the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the 36 states Houses of Assembly, whose resolutions are part of the legislative journey to the bills; liaise with relevant government agencies, civil society organisations, multilateral and supranational agencies, to achieve a wholesome amendment to the Nigeria’s constitution; and liaising with relevant government agencies, civil society organisations, multilateral and supranational agencies to ensure a wholesome amendment to the Nigeria’s constitution.

Stop Nigerian Navy from destroying illegal refineries -NULGE urges FG

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, (NULGE), has appealed to the Federal Government to stop the Navy from destroying refining sites tagged “illegal” in the Niger-Delta.

AmbaliOlatunji, NULGE President said this at a news conference to mark the end of its National Executive Council (NEC,) meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to MrOlatunji, NEC-in-Session resolved that the union should call President Bola Tinubu to prevail on the Nigerian Navy to stop destroying some refining sites in the Niger Delta region.

“Destroying those sites has no benefits whatsoever for the country’s oil and gas sector as well as for Nigerians at large.

“Instead of destroying those refining sites, they should be licensed properly and mandated to pay taxes.

“This will create job opportunities and be sources of revenue earnings,” he said.

MrOlatunji also called on the federal government to consider licensing more modular refineries that have the capacity to refine crude oil.

“If the multinationals are leaving the country, we should encourage individuals that are willing and capable to do it in Nigeria,” he said.

“If we can work on those areas, coupled with minimum wage, the effects of fuel subsidy removal will go down,” he said.

The NULGE President also said that NEC-in-Session took note of the hardship occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.

He therefore called on the President to mitigate the effects by creating Compress Natural Gas, CNG, Centres across the country.

Mr Olatunji also called on the President and the Tripartite Committee on minimum wage to arrive at an acceptable minimum wage for workers.

On security, he urged the federal government to allow the Local Government to implement community policing in protecting lives and property of the citizens within their jurisdiction.

Bandits demand cough syrup, rice, N290m to release seven hostages

Bandits who abducted seven residents of Kuduru community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on December 28 have demanded N290 million ransom, drugs and foodstuffs to release the hostages.

The victims, including a pregnant woman, three children and four adults, have now spent one month and four days in captivity.

A leader in the community (names withheld) said the bandits had threatened to kill two of the victims if their demands were not met on time.

He said the abductors also demanded food items, drugs, bed sheets and cardigans.

They have reached out to us to bring N290 million to secure their release or that they will kill two of them. We have a pregnant woman and three children among them.

“They asked us to bring bags of rice, packs of Indomie, cough syrups, antibiotics, bed sheets and cardigans for the bandits’ use.

They insist that the N290 million ransom must be complete for them to let our people go”, he stated.

The community leader therefore begged the Inspector General of Police IGP, Kayode Egbetokun and the Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja,, to come to the rescue of the hostages.

“We know that they are trying their best but we plead with them to rescue our families like they did to the six sisters and the Ariyos.

“We understand that these people are already falling sick in captivity because of the harsh weather and the treatment there”, he said.

2027 presidency: Play big uncle to younger politicians – Bode George tells Atiku

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Bode George, has cautioned the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, AtikuAbubakar, against the possibility of contesting in 2027. George said Atiku should play the big uncle and allow younger politicians to run for presidency as he would be too old in 2027.

While addressing journalists in Abuja, George said, “My brother AtikuA bubakar was 77 years old last year and by 2027 he will be 81 years. “Atiku should be in a situation where he plays like the big uncle in the room or the elder in the room.

What would anybody carry me now to do because I’m heading to 80 years and I want to go and be minister, to do what? Let’s mentor the younger generation and let’s be consistent with our strong belief in our party norms.”

Professors now seek SA jobs – Peter Obi bemoans poor earnings by lecturers

Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the last general election, Mr Peter Obi, on Thursday, bemoaned the working conditions of university lecturers.

Obi said he was recently broken when his friend, a university professor for about 14 years, requested him to put in words for him so that he could be appointed as a Special Adviser to a candidate contesting for the House of Representatives if he wins.

In a post on his X handle, the former Anambra State governor suggested that the reason for the bizarre request from the professor was because he would earn more and receive more perks as an SA than as a professor.

Touched by the request, Obi said he did a comparative analysis showing that after putting in 14 years of hard work, having attained the zenith of his academic career, a Nigerian university professor now earns 10% of what he earned 14 years ago, saying it could only be only possible in Nigeria.

Obi maintained that the country requires as many hands and a committed workforce as it could get in the education sector considering its critical role in the development of a nation.

He, however, questioned how it could get such, when the earnings of the country’s professors were going backward relatively.

“While in Nsukka, I met one of those brilliant fellows I knew while I was a student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in the 80s.

The fellow graduated with a first class and became a lecturer in the institution. When I later visited the University as the then Governor of Anambra State, he proudly announced to me that he was already a professor and I rejoiced with him.

Peter Obi

I met him again in Nsukka on Wednesday, but our exchange of pleasantries resulted in very pathetic tales about his general welfare. I noticed in his look and mien that all his happiness of being a professor had vanished.

“He broke my heart when he requested that I put in words for him so that Hon. Dennis Agbo can appoint him as Special Adviser when he wins.

“The reason for the bizarre request that shocked me was that he would earn more and receive more perks as an SA than as a Professor.

Touched by this and applying my finance background I decided to do some comparative analysis.

“By January 31, 2010, the salary of a Nigerian University Professor was about N400,000. With the then prevalent exchange rate of N150.10 per dollar, the salary amounted to about $2665.

“Fourteen years later, on January 31, 2024, the salary of a University Professor remains about N400,000. With the prevailing exchange rate of N1,510 per dollar, the same salary now amounts to about $265.

“So after putting in 14 years of hard work, having attained the zenith of his academic career, a Nigerian University Professor now earns 10% of what he earned 14 years ago – this is only possible in Nigeria,” he said.

Enugu Ex-commissioner, Mmamel seeks Gov Mbah’s intervention over sealing of layout

Gov. Peter Mbah

A former commissioner in Enugu State, Barr Ozo Joe Mmamel has begged Governor Peter Mbah to carry out a detailed investigation into claims of land grabbing at a layout adjacent the abandoned Enugu International Conference Centre.

The Conference Centre project, initiated by the then governor Chimaroke Nnamani administration, was abandoned by successive governments.

There is now hint that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has taken moves to complete the gigantic edifice, with indications that the state government also plans to take over the nearby layout.

However, addressing journalists in Enugu on Wednesday, Mmamel said the plot of land housing his structure and that of others was duly allocated to him by then administration of Sullivan Chime.

While dismissing claims that he was a land grabber, he pleaded with Governor Mbah to examine the facts and not believe unverified claims being made on social media.

Gov. Peter Mbah

Mmamel, who said he would not be confrontational with the government, said “sometime in 2014, the Enugu State government under the leadership of His Excellency, Barr. Sullivan Chime allotted some parcels of land to eleven allottees in the land adjourning the International Conference Center.

“Proper processes were followed because the Surveyor General of the state designated it as a layout.

“He parcelled it and allotted it to eleven persons which I happen to be one of them.

We were asked to perfect the allotment by paying the necessary fees for us to be issued with the certificate of occupancy and we paid.

“So, all the procedures in that order were followed and the statutory fees duly paid. In that same 2014, certificates of occupancy were issued to all the allottees.

“The ones that wanted to build, submitted their plans to the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority.

“The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority Law provides that if you submit your building plan and if after one month there is no objection, it is deemed to have been approved. If it is not approved, they will even come and mark it ‘Do not build’.

“And since then, we have not had any interference from the government showing that we have encumbered the government land.

“So, it is clear that we are the bonafide owners of the lands in the layout.”

On the recent developments, he said not quite too long ago, a staff of the government in the person of the Chief of Staff to the governor, Barr. Victor Udeh came to the layout’s main gate and locked it.

According to Mmamel, “Not even a single notice was issued to any of the land owners before locking the main gate to the estate or to even evacuate any sensitive building materials from the layout.

“I had a hundred bags of cement that got caked. Then, the scavengers have taken charge of the estate since no one is permitted to enter there and they steal building materials, including iron rods.

Customs committed to transparent financial statements-CG

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has expressed  commitment to adhere to transparency in its financial dealings.

The Comptroller General (C-G) of the service, AdewaleAdeniyi, made this known  in a statement  by the National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada yesterday in Abuja.

Adeniyi  said the move was aimed at ensuring efficient auditing of its accounts.

According to the C-G,  the commitment followed queries raised by the Auditor-General of the federation on the 2017 audited account, over NCS’s non-submission of audited financial statements for the 2016, 2017, and 2018 financial years.

This was when the C-G and his management appeared y the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chaired by Bamidele Salam.

Adeniyi said that NCS had been using integrated technology to collect revenue for more than 20 years, with more than 20 commercial banks involved in the process.

He explained that the service engaged the banks through a contractual agreement, which granted them access to a technology platform for the collection of payments.

According to him, the fund is remitted directly by the banks to the federation accounts.

The C-G promised to collaborate with the committee to ensure transparency and accountability in its operations.

“Compliance is something we take seriously, and we will ensure transparency if there are any grey areas that need our service to foster efficiency.

“ I am happy to mention that my team and I are prepared and will, in the most transparent manner, present statements to the committee,” he said.

It would be recalled that the C-G on Monday at a retreat for Senior NCS Officers in Abuja, said  the service had implemented robust risk management strategies to enhance the integrity of customs processes and mitigate risks

Insecurity: Exercise restraint in your reportage, Presidency urges media

The media have been urged to exercise restraint in their reportage concerning the current security challenges in some parts of the country.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, MrBayoOnanuga, stated this in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja.

Onanuga said that the media had the responsibility to promote laudable actions by government and make positive criticism based on the overriding national interest.

According to him, screaming headlines that paint gory pictures of the situations will only hurt the country by scaring away genuine local and foreign direct investments.

“Media reporting about cases of kidnapping, communal killings and isolated terrorism acts must show some moderation by not giving the impression that all Nigerians no longer sleep with two eyes closed or are not safe in going about their day-to-day business.

“To sell our newspapers or clickbait, we tend to exaggerate and embellish, sometimes forgetting the social responsibility of the media, not to give the impression that our country is under siege by criminals or that every nook and cranny of our country is under their stranglehold.

“One of our newspapers took this responsibility to heart in its report on the same Tuesday, making its major headline, the efforts by security agents to rein in the minority vagabonds in our midst,” he said.

The presidential aide stated that though Nigeria had yet to reach the zenith of security, it was still not the worst country in terms of insecurity.

For instance, he said that in robbery and kidnapping, Nigeria was not among the most endemic countries, adding that global listing put the country at less than one person to 100,000 persons involved in the crime.

Onanuga said: “In a report by the World Population Review, Nigeria is not among the top 10 countries in the world, with kidnapping epidemic.

“Turkey leads with 42 people kidnapped out of 100,000 people. Lebanon is second with 15 people out of 100,000 and Kuwait third with 12 out of 100,000 held in captivity.

“Canada, Belgium, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Eswatini and United Kingdom make up the remaining top 10. Kidnapping in Nigeria is 0.334 per 100,000.

“The frightening headlines on Tuesday were based on the report by the Civil Society Joint Action Group that calls for an emergency on the security situation, surprisingly oblivious that our security agencies have been working in that spirit for a long time, since 2009.”

He called for support media support in the efforts by security agencies at nipping criminality in the bud since the beginning of insecurity in the 1990s.

“Our security agencies deserve society’s appreciation for their efforts so far in trying to nip in the bud the evils of kidnapping, banditry, communal killings and terrorism in our country.

“Their efforts, most often understated, have made our country safer, at least, than South Africa or the United States where 44,310 people were killed last year in gun violence,” he said.

The presidential aide said that government had been putting in place various kinetic and non-kinetic measures to improve security of lives and property. “President Tinubu has been providing material support to security agencies to discharge their duties.

“In recent weeks, we have seen the police setting up a Special Intervention Squad, equipped with drones.

“The DSS has stepped up its anti-kidnapping act, rescuing 154 abducted people in the last few days.

“Last week, President Tinubu approved N50 billion as special funds to address some of the lingering security challenges in North-East. He also approved special funds to the FCT for the acquisition of equipment to track criminals,” he said.

Onanuga urged all stakeholders to complement the efforts of the national and sub-national governments in tackling insecurity in the country.

Residents of the FCT have been struggling with a rising spate of kidnapping in the Territory’s Area Councils, especially Bwari.

On Sunday, January 28, gunmen abducted two teenage sisters in Chikakore, a community in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council of the FCT.

The ICIR reported that many residents of the area council fled their homes due to the rising spate of abductions in the area.

As of January 19, at least 42 people had been abducted within the area council in 2024 alone.

Before the current spike in cases of abduction, there have been other security concerns among the FCT residents, especially since members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) blew up the Kuje medium correctional facility on July 5, freeing all 64 suspected terrorists and over 800 other inmates.

The gunmen also ambushed the Presidential Guards Brigade in the Bwari area of the nation’s capital days later, killing nearly a dozen officers.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment and deployment of 10 Commissioners of Police (CPs) to various commands in the country.

Mr Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations of PSC, said this in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

Ani said the appointment and deployment followed the promotion of 14 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to the rank of CP.

He said the newly-appointed CPs include Peter Opara, Osun; Olughemiga Adesina, Benue; Akinwale Adeniran, Ekiti; Mohammed Abba, Adamawa; Beneth Igwe, FCT, and Abaniwonda Olufemi, Delta.

Others are Ademola Ayilara, Akwa Ibom; David Iloyanomon, Taraba; Abayomi Peter, Ondo State, and Hassan Yabnet, Plateau.

Ani said the PSC Chairman, Dr Solomon Arase, had called on the newly-deployed CPs to rebuild public trust in the police through robust partnership.

Arase warned that the commission would not accept any excuse for failure in delivering effective and efficient leadership.

He pledged the commitment of the commission to continue to encourage the CPs, but warned that the security of lives and properties in their areas of jurisdiction should not be taken for granted.

N200,000 minimum wage no longer realistic – Labour

The Nigerian Labour Congress said on Tuesday that the N200,000 minimum wage it earlier proposed to the Federal Government was no longer realistic, considering the country’s current economic situation.

The congress, which spoke through its National Vice President, Tommy Etim, was reacting to Tuesday’s inauguration of the Minimum Wage Committee by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Etim, in an exclusive interview with Our correspondent on Tuesday, emphasised that the congress would base its national minimum wage negotiation on the current economic reality rather than what it earlier proposed.

He said, “You are aware that when we opted for the N200,000, the socio-economic challenges were not as biting as they are now. And when you now look at the exchange rate, it was not what it is now. The naira rate not been devalued as it is now. So, N200,000 is no longer tenable.”

When our correspondent asked whether there was a minimum figure the congress would take along to the committee, Etim said, “We are not going there with a fixed amount, but definitely not N200,000. By the time we get there, we will decide based on the socio-economic situation. That’s what we are going to base our national minimum wage discussion and negotiation on.”

The Federal Government had earlier charged the 37-man wage committee to hasten its deliberations and submit its recommendations promptly while directing the Ministry of Finance to ensure its adequate funding and calling for collective bargaining in good faith, emphasising contract adherence even as he urged committee members to consult outside their ranks.

With its membership cutting across federal and state governments, the private sector, and the organised labour, the panel is to recommend a new national minimum wage for the country.

To guarantee sustainability in all tiers of government, President Bola Tinubu said the committee must pay attention to the ability of all parties to pay the new wage, just as he asked the committee members to ensure the timely completion of their assignment.

Tinubu, represented by the Vice President, said this when he inaugurated the tripartite committee on the national minimum wage at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.

“The committee is anticipated to conclude its deliberations promptly and submit its report and recommendations.

“This timely submission is crucial to initiate the necessary processes for implementing a new National Minimum Wage.

“The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy has been instructed to allocate the essential funds and logistics to the Committee, facilitating the timely completion of its assigned task. I hereby inaugurate the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage and extend my best wishes for fruitful deliberations,” declared the President.

Tuesday’s inauguration follows months of agitation from organised labour who expressed concerns over the FG’s failure to inaugurate the new national minimum wage committee as promised during negotiations last October.

In May 2017, the House of Representatives moved to amend the National Minimum Wage Act for a compulsory review of workers’ remuneration every five years.

Consequently, the Minimum Wage Act 2019, signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, empowers the committee to deliberate and present an agreed wage to be ratified by the National Assembly after due legislative scrutiny.

Buhari also signed the Minimum Wage Act that approved N30,000 for federal and state workers in the same year. However, Tinubu announced the discontinuance of fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023, which triggered a sharp rise in the general cost of living.

Although the administration approved an additional N35,000 wage award for six months (starting September 2023) to alleviate the impact of the subsidy removal, the organised labour maintained that this was only a provisional solution and called for a complete review of the minimum wage in 2024.

The President said his administration hopes to surpass the basic Social Protection Floor for all Nigerian workers, considering the sustainable payment capacity of each tier of government and other employers or businesses.

He explained why: “I express this viewpoint because the minimum wage represents the least amount of compensation an employee should receive for their labour, and as such, it should be rooted in social justice and equity.”

“I hope that the results of your deliberations will be consensual and acceptable to all parties involved,” the President told members of the committee.

He reaffirmed his administration’s promise to improve the welfare of Nigerian workers and, by extension, the entire nation, saying, “The labour force stands as the cornerstone of the progress of every nation, and ours has been the enduring engine of our pursuit of development.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, urged the committee to give its best, noting that the task before it carried the hopes and aspirations of millions of Nigerian workers.

Akume said the new panel fulfilled the promise of the Tinubu administration to embark on a comprehensive review of the minimum wage for the average Nigerian worker.

On his part, the Chairman of the tripartite committee, Bukar Aji, assured the President that the committee would do justice to the task assigned to it.

“We shall, by God’s grace, carry out extensive consultations with key stakeholders to arrive at a new minimum wage that is fair, practical and implementable,” Aji, a former Head of Service of the Federation, said.

Meanwhile, Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State, who is a member of the wage committee, told journalists that he foresaw no challenges in the next two months of the committee’s assignment.

“We don’t want to preempt the outcome of this meeting, but you need to understand that the sub-nationals also have challenges and that the Federal Government, in its own wisdom, has brought the sub-nationals into perspective and this discussion will be done together with the sub-national, so I’m not sure we’re going to foresee any challenge,” he said.

On his part, THE Vice President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Humphrey Ngonadi, argued that raising the minimum wage would make no difference if the prices of essential commodities kept soaring.

“I thank God for this initiative that the government is taking at this particular place, but I’m still worried. We may remember some time long ago, there was the Udoji Award and that was the first time salaries of workers were increased and immediately after the increment, the commodities in the market ran up to meet.

“So while we increase the salary of the workers, let the government work on bringing down the prices of commodities in the market.

“If a worker is paid N1m as the minimum wage and a bag of rice is N900,000, the N1m still has no meaning. So what I think is while we are thinking of minimum wage, to hike the salary of the worker, the government, on its side, has to think of how that money will have value,” Ngonadi argued.

The 37-man tripartite Committee has six Governors, some cabinet Ministers, representatives of the organised labour and the private sector among its members.

The governors include Bago of Niger State, representing the North Central; Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, representing the North-East; Dikko Radda of Katsina State, representing the North-West; Charles Soludo of Anambra State, representing the South-East; Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, representing the South-West, and Otu Bassey of Cross River State, representing the South-South.

The ministers are the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. (Mrs) Yemi Esan, and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

Fake Customs CG arrested over recruitment scam

The Nigeria Customs Service has arrested one Abdul-Rahman Ibrahim, in his fifties, for his involvement in fraudulent activities and impersonation of the Comptroller-General of Customs and other high-ranking government officials.

This was disclosed in a statement posted on the official X handle of the NCS on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the NCS spokesperson, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, revealed that the suspect’s arrest was made possible through intelligence gathered by the Customs Police Unit.

The statement partly read, “The suspect, Abdul-Rahman Ibrahim, was apprehended for his involvement in impersonating the Comptroller-General of Customs, Chief of Staff to the President, and the Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

“According to the National PRO, the suspect has fraudulently lured numerous unsuspecting citizens to pay him money for the issuance of ‘job appointment letters,’ thereby extorting over N1 million from them.

“This arrest underscores the relentless effort of the Nigeria Customs Service in mitigating and combating criminal elements who exploit the service’s name for fraudulent activities.”

The statement added that Ibrahim confessed to his involvement in the fraudulent act and mentioned accomplices in the operation, which prompted further investigation to arrest and prosecute his accomplices.

The suspect was found in possession of counterfeit documents, including fake Customs and NSCDC appointment letters, and forged introduction letters purportedly signed by high-ranking government officials, among others.

It was reported in June 2023, that the Lagos police arrested an alleged fake woman customs officer, Rakiya Musa, for allegedly swindling unsuspecting members of the public.

In December 2023, the management of the NCS also disclosed that there was no recruitment exercise going on in its service, and warned citizens about fake recruitment adverts posted on social media platforms.

Representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, and International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, yesterday, stormed the Federal High Court, Abuja for the trial of Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, UNICAL.

While Linda Bala led the delegation of the NBA into the courtroom presided over by Justice James Omotosho, Amina Agbaje, the country Vice President of FIDA, led the team of other lawyers to watch briefs for their associations.

It was reported that the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and other related offences Commission, ICPC, is prosecuting Ndifon and Sunny Anyanwu (1st and 2nd defendants) on allegations bordering on sexual harassment and obstruction of investigation.
Anyanwu, one of the lawyers in the defence, was joined in the amended charge filed on January 22 by the ICPC on the allegation that he called one of the prosecution witnesses on her mobile telephone during the pendency of the charge against Ndifon to threaten her.

Justice Omotosho had, ordered the two defendants to be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of their bail applications.

Upon resumed hearing, Wilberforce Otuagona, SAN, announced an appearance of Prof. Ndifon and Anyanwu, though Solomon Umoh, SAN, their counsel on the last adjourned date, was also in court.

Otuagona urged the court to hear the bail application of his clients before trial continuation.

But the judge told him that the order was to take the trial before the bail application.

He said this was to ensure protection for the witness, who was alleged to have been called on the phone by Anyanwu.

Justice Omotosho said he overruled himself on the last adjourned date to take the bail plea first after Umoh, who appeared for the defence, pleaded with the court, despite the earlier court order.

He said he was in practice as a prosecutor for 18 years before joining the bench.

Supreme Court affirms Fintiri’s election as Adamawa Governor

The All Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate in the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Adamawa State, Senator Aisha Dahiru Binani on Wednesday failed in their bid to unseat Governor Ahmadu Fintiri at the Supreme Court.

The apex court, in its final judgment on the Adamawa gubernatorial legal battle, dismissed Binani’s petition in its entirety for lacking evidence and substance.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice John Inyang Okoro, the Supreme Court held that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, who pronounced Binani winner of the governorship election, engaged in a serious act of criminality and irresponsibility.

Justice Okoro said that Binani engaged in self deceit by hanging to the unlawful and unconstitutional acts of the REC to hold herself out as winner of the governorship poll.

The apex court emphatically held that the REC had no power under any known law to declare election results as he did in the Adamawa governorship election.

Justice Okoro maintained that the only person vested with the powers to make declaration on elections is the Returning Officer.

He warned public officers to always act within the law in the discharge of responsibilities and not get carried away by greed.

Justice Okoro subsequently dismissed Binani’s petition and upheld the concurrent findings of the Adamawa State Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal which had earlier dismissed the petition by Binani and the APC

Why We’re Demanding N400,000 As New Minimum Wage – LABOUR

The labour union has proposed a minimum wage of $300 (N436,500) for Nigerian workers ahead of negotiations on the new national minimum wage. Chairman, Trade Union Side, Joint Meeting of the National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), Comrade Benjamin Anthony, made this proposal at the 2023 meetings of the Separate and Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council held in Goshen City, Nasarawa State, on Tuesday. The union argued that the current minimum wage of N30,000 has since been eroded by the high exchange rate coupled with the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy which has translated into the high cost of living in the country, hence the demand for a new wage.

Anthony, who was represented by the Secretary of the Union, Comrade Boma Mohammed, also frowned at the recent delays in the payment of salaries by the Federal Government to workers, saying the trend must be stopped and avert the repeat of such things as the suffering in the land, which is already unbearable.

He said, “In light of the above, Labour has proposed a Living Wage of $300 (N436,500) for Nigerian Workers. This is due to the fall in the value of our currency, today if you carry N100,000 to the market you will come back with a leather bag of items.

“We call on Government to immediately pay the arrears of the N35,000 wage award along with the current and expedited action on the process of getting a new living wage to bring succour to the working class people,” he added.

Meanwhile, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, said most governors of the 37-member Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage are not complying with the proposed base pay structure.

Ajaero stated this in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday.

Recall that Vice President KashimShettima inaugurated the committee in Abuja earlier on Tuesday, saying the decision was aimed at ensuring a decent living wage and in compliance with the existing National Minimum Wage Act of 2019, which will expire in a few months.

He said, ”Most of the governors in the minimum wage committee are those who are not paying minimum wage or paying them in breaches.”

”The governors who are in full compliance with the minimum wage are not adequately represented, so whatever made the Federal Government bring in those who are not compliant or compliant in breaches to form the bulk of the membership of the minimum wage committee from the state government that will unfold with time,” he added.

Kidnappers strike again In Kubwa Abuja, Abduct Two Sisters, Demand N30million Ransom

This is coming barely eight days after the Chikakore community protested to the office of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the terrible state of the major road linking their community which they described as one of the causes of serial kidnapping in the area.

Two teenage sisters have been kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be bandits at Guita community, Chikakore in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

This is coming barely eight days after the Chikakore community protested to the office of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the terrible state of the major road linking their community which they described as one of the causes of serial kidnapping in the area.

SaharaReporters gathered on Wednesday that the kidnappers returned last Sunday around 11:25pm despite the patrol of military men and policemen in the area.

It was learnt that the gunmen numbering six, made away the girls, who were said to be 16 and 14 years old through the forests and hills in the area.

A police source in the area, who confirmed their kidnap to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, said the attackers took three of a man’s children, two girls and one boy, but they went away with two girls and sent back one (the boy) from the bush.

He was sent to go and tell their father to prepare N30million as the ransom.

The source said, “The gunmen have changed their approach, when they came; they didn’t shoot like before, but forced themselves inside. While they were forcing themselves inside, the owner of the house (a Calabar man) ran to the vigilante’s office, then, he ran to the commander’s house before the commander could call another person, and rush to his house, the gunmen were already gone.

“It was when they were going, they started shooting, unlike before that they would shoot before the operation and till the end.

“They took three of his children, two girls and one boy, but they went away with two and sent back one (the boy) from the bush that he should go and tell their father to prepare 30million naira for their ransom.

“When they were taken, the two girls (16 and 14 years) one of the girls was wearing night gown, the mother tried to plead with the gunmen to let her wear something for the cold, but instead they beat up the mother. She had no option than to just let the girls go the way they were under the cold.

“Before the police came to the scene, they were already gone. Some of the vigilante later traced them to the railway line, to the rocks but there was no trace anymore.

“The man that his daughters were kidnapped is a front liner security payment and he has made some several donations to the community.”

However, Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesperson, when contacted by SaharaReporters, promised to get the details and to revert.

EFCC uncovers religious body laundering money for terrorists, traces N7bn to another

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, said the agency has uncovered a religious sect laundering money for terrorists.

Olukoyede, who made the revelation at a one-day dialogue on “Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption.” yesterday in Abuja, also said N7 billion fraud proceeds was traced to another religious organisation.

He further said the EFCC had found religious organisations, institutions, sects and bodies culpable of money laundering in the country.

Olukoyede said one of such religious bodies dragged the commission to court to protect its leader after laundered money was traced to its bank account.

The EFCC boss said the religious body got a court injunction restraining the commission from inviting, arresting or prosecuting its leader.

“We will not give up on recovering the stolen funds,” Olukoyede said.

“It is so sad that as I stand before the eminent audience today, that our experience in fighting corruption has to do with the religious leaders and even traditional rulers.

“As I stand before you there is a matter we are handling of over 30 billion fleeced from Nigeria, and we were able to trace N7 billion to a particular religious body.

“As we wrote a letter to the leader, the next thing we saw was a restraining order, stopping us from inviting them, stopping us from recovering the money.”

He said that the EFCC had appealed the judgment.

“Of course, we have appealed. Sometimes ago, we investigated the issue of money laundering, somewhere in this country, there is a particular religious sect that launders money for terrorists, these are the problems we are battling with,” Olukoyede added.

He also revealed that since he assumed office about three months ago, the anti-graft commission has secured 747 convictions, but said over 60 per cent of the convictions were cybercrime cases.

“To our faith leaders, my appeal is that those who lead our society from churches and mosques should develop messages that glorify industry, hard work, probity and contentment over riches, irrespective of how it was made.

“We all must stand up and be counted in the efforts to reset the mentality of our youths that the fast lane to affluence is fraud.

“Aside from our commitment to using faith to tackle corruption in various levels of society, we have also developed a remarkable tool which we intend to deploy to prevent corruption in our Ministries, Department and Agencies,” he said.

According to him, this tool, a Fraud Risk Assessment Project, is meant to assist government agencies to address systemic vulnerabilities at the personal, institutional and environmental levels.

“When fully deployed, it will save the nation billions of  Naira in stolen wealth, time and resources spent in investigating grand corruption cases.

“The project is intended to commence, in the first instance, with 20 extremely vulnerable agencies of government.

“We believe that with the support of the government and the cooperation of the leadership of the selected agencies, we will be able to drastically close the space for brazen graft in the public sector,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the one-day event was aimed at addressing the challenges of youth involvement in cybercrimes and how religion could be used for their reorientation.

“Youth, Religion and the Fight Against Corruption,” featured the launch of the Interfaith Preaching and Teaching Manual developed by the Interfaith Anti-Corruption Advisory Committee of the Commission to instigate abhorrence for corruption among adherents of Islam and Christianity.

The EFCC’s Fraud Risk Assessment Prevention and Control Project for Ministries, Departments and Agencies was also inaugurated at the event.(NAN)

He said the service had taken measures that would significantly improve the efficiency of supply chains and ease conducting meticulous post-clearance audits.

Police nab banker for staging own kidnap

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a staff of a microfinance bank, Olumide Openaike, for allegedly staging his own kidnap over N1.7 million debt in Abeokuta.

Openaike was reportedly missing but was later found in Mokwa, Niger State, last week.

The wife of the banker, Temitope, had told journalists how his husband, Olumide, went missing on January 17 on his way to work.

But last Thursday, Mrs Openaike hinted journalists that his husband had been found on Tuesday.

Speaking over the phone, Odutola said, “Yes, the police have found out that the banker, Olumide Openaike, faked his abduction over N1.7m debt

The money actually belongs to the bank where he works.

He (Openaike) said he then got depressed and decided to fake his abduction. He is already detained by the police.”

Insecurity: Senate Summons Service Chiefs, Adjourns For By-election campaigns

The Senate has invited the service chiefs in the country for an interaction concerning the rising spate of insecurity in the country.

The service chiefs are: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is expected to be part of the meeting amongst others.

The service chiefs are expected to brief the lawmakers on their efforts and areas they need support.

The service chiefs are expected at the National Assembly next week since the lawmakers have adjourned for one week in order to participate in the by-elections campaigns. The elections take place on Saturday.

The Senate had in December 2023, invited the service chiefs but the invitation was not honoured because the lawmakers went on recess.

Put reading a motion on the spate of insecurity in Nigeria sponsored by the entire 109 senators and presented by the Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate noted with sadness the rising spate of killings, kidnappings, banditry, and other criminal activities in the nation.

“Senate further noted the recent killings in Agatu local government area of Benue State, which led to loss of lives, including security personnel and wanting destruction of properties as well as the brutal killings of eleven residents of Logo local government area of Benue State.

“Senate equally noted the various kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory where victims have been killed after collecting ransom.

“The Senate is also aware of several cases of kidnappings all over the country where huge ransom had been paid and several of the victims still got killed.

“The Senate is also aware that the recent killings of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State and the abduction of primary school pupils in Ekiti had further aggravated the level of insecurity in the country.

“Senate notes the unfortunate bomb explosion at Bodija in Ibadan Oyo State where no less than five lives were lost and several residential houses, schools, hotels, and religious centres were destroyed.“The Senate equally notes the killing of several residents of Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin Ladi communities in Plateau State,” Bamidele said, praying that the lawmakers should invoke its earlier resolution and invite the security chiefs.”That the Senate do invoke its earlier resolutions to invite the security chiefs for an interactive session with the Senate with a view to resolving the insecurity that is plaguing the country,” Bamidele said before the prayers were approved by the lawmakers who also observe a minute silence in honour of the departed.

Speaking, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said after the interactive session with the security chiefs, which has been agreed for next week, they will also have a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“After our interaction with the service chiefs which should be next week, we would also fix a time to discuss the outcome with Mr President.

“We have a responsibility to collaborate with the executive and contribute our ideas to ensure that our constituents and ourselves, including our children can sleep with their two eyes closed.

“Security is everybody’s business, and without security, we can not make progress. We are very determined to make laws and pass resolutions aimed at ensuring rapid progress of the country and the immediate improvement of the Nigerian economy.

“This will not be possible without a secured nation. We will take this up with Mr. President after the interaction with security chiefs,” Akpabio said while announcing a one week recess for the Senate and the House of Representatives in order to participate in the office season campaigns.

“In view of the elections taking place on Saturday, we are taking part in the campaign and will resume on the six days of February, 2023,” Akpabio said.

While welcoming the lawmakers back from the new year recess Akpabio said their performance last year has raised the expectations of Nigerians, describing it as commendable.

“When a task is executed with excellence, expectations naturally soar. Thus, the recess provided us with an opportunity to reconnect with our loved ones, reignite our commitment to the public good, and return to this esteemed chamber with renewed vigour and determination.

“Our constituents have bestowed upon us the weighty responsibility to serve, lead, and make decisions that shape our nation’s course and the welfare of our people. We must never forget the gravity of this responsibility or the faith our constituents have placed in us. “Allow me to recount a story from American history captured in the publication “A Message to Garcia” by Elbert Hubbard. During the Spanish-American war, the United States needed to contact the Cuban rebel leader, Gen Calixto Garcia, for a joint military strategy. However, Garcia was a wanted man, and his whereabouts were unknown. The American president, William MacKinley, entrusted a man named Andrew Rowan with a letter to deliver to Garcia, without giving him any directions. Rowan did not ask “Where do I find him?” He strapped the letter to his chest, journeyed to Cuba, found Garcia, delivered the letter, and returned with a great reply.

“Just like Rowan, each Senator has been entrusted with a mandate, akin to Rowan’s letter. Our constituents believe that we can navigate the corridors of power, do what is right, make them proud, and return with tangible results. We must carry this mandate close to our hearts, act upon it, and make our constituents proud. Like Rowan, we must traverse uncharted territory, break new ground, and find the building blocks needed to create a great and united country. These blocks are courage, unity, integrity, and strategy. We are trusted, just as Rowan was trusted, we must take results home, just like Rowan did.

Distinguished colleagues, it is our duty to justify the trust vested in us by diligently addressing the challenges facing our nation and striving for the betterment of society. As Distinguished Senators, we have a unique platform to effect change and advocate for our constituents’ interests. History and future generations will not forgive us if we squander this opportunity or fail to leave our mark on the annals of time,” Akpabio said, urging the lawmakers to use their time in the revered chamber to delve into pressing issues, engage in passionate and respectful debates, and craft legislation that reflects the needs and aspirations of the people they represent.

“In the coming months, we will face a multitude of challenges, from economic recovery and healthcare reform to national security and social justice. It is imperative that we approach these issues with a spirit of collaboration and a commitment to finding common ground. Let us rise above partisan divides and work together, transcending party lines, for the greater good of our nation. Our patriotism demands that we heed no other call except Nigeria’s call—the call echoed in our National Anthem. Let us continue to work and collaborate with the Executive Arm under His Excellency President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, without compromising our independence as enshrined in our constitution.

“I urge each and every one of us to embrace the power of dialogue and the importance of compromise. Let us listen to one another with open hearts and open minds, guided by reason and evidence in our decision-making. Let us be champions for the marginalised and the voiceless, advocates of justice and equality. Our purpose should be twofold: to do as much good as we can to all the people we can, and to prevent any injustices from befalling anyone in our great nation, for injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

As we embark on this new legislative session, let us be inspired by the limitless potential of what we can achieve together. Let us remember that the work we do here has the power to transform lives, uplift communities, and shape the destiny of our great nation and the fortunes of our continent. We must be bold in our vision, unwavering in our commitment, and steadfast in our dedication to the principles of democracy and good governance,” Akpabio added.
