The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Saturday’s Jalingo, Yorro and Zing Federal Constituency by-election as inconclusive

Daniel Ayuba, the INEC returning officer for the election said this after the collation of results in Jalingo on Sunday.

Mr Ayuba said that the decision was based on the provisions of the Electoral Act.

He said that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Tafida Sadiq, scored 17,214 votes, while the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Innocent Jabayang, scored 15,537, votes to place second.

Mr Ayuba said that the 1,677 votes margin between the two candidates was not enough to declare Mr Sadiq as the winner, hence the election was declared inconclusive.“In the Electoral Act, there is a principle which stipulates that, if the margin of victory is less than the total number of collected PVCs in the areas where election is cancelled, the result cannot be declared and anyone declared returned.

“From the computation that we have done and the results available to us, the margin of victory is less than the total number of collected PVCs in the areas where election did not hold, or cancelled which is 14,759.

“Consequently, the election is inconclusive and a rerun would be held in the respective areas between the candidate with the highest votes and the first runner-up,” he said.

Our correspondent reported that the election followed the death of Ismaila Maihanchi who was elected in the February 2023 general election.

Pregnant woman arrested for stabbing farmer over stolen plantains

A pregnant woman identified as Blessing Godday, 32, has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command for allegedly stabbing another woman, ImeranIdema, to death over a bunch of plantains.

The incident occurred in the Adada community in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state. According to reports, Godday, a mother of nine, allegedly stole the plantains from Idema’s family plantation while looking for food for her children.

When confronted by Idema, who was guarding the plantation, an argument broke out; the situation later escalated as Godday refused to return the stolen plantains.

Sources claimed that Idema attempted to stop Godday with a machete, leading to a physical altercation.

During the struggle, Godday allegedly inflicted two fatal machete wounds on Idema’s head and shoulder before fleeing the scene.

“Mrs. ImeranIdema, machete in hand, immediately accosted her (Blessing) and asked her to surrender the bunch of plantain,” the witness said.

“‘Drop that plantain,’ Imeran shouted as she approached Blessing, who also had a sharp machete with which she had illegally harvested the bunch of plantain.

“Instead, Blessing bolted towards another exit. Imeran ran after her, and she grabbed the fleeing woman and threatened to use the machete on her.

“Blessing then stopped running and faced her (Imeran). An altercation ensued, which led to Imeran landing a blow on Blessing’s right foot.”

“Blessing then dropped the bunch and launched vicious attacks with her own machete. She hit out with the machete, inflicting two cuts on Imeran’s head and shoulder.

“Imeran collapsed in pain, and Blessing quickly left the scene, abandoning the bunch of plantain and fled.

” The source added that, following an investigation, the police apprehended Blessing, who was later released for medical treatment due to an injury sustained during the confrontation. However, after learning of Idema’s death, authorities arrested her again.

The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident and the suspect’s arrest, stating, “Yes, I can confirm the incident. The woman was arrested, and the matter has been charged in court.”

EFCC arrests pastor for N1.3bn fake grants, money laundering

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested the General Overseer of Faith On The Rock Ministry International, Apostle Theophilus Oloche Ebonyi, for defrauding church members and other Nigerians.

According to a statement by the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the suspect used fake grants from the Ford Foundation to defraud his victims the sum of N1, 319,040,274.31. The statement disclosed that Mr Ebonyi was arrested for defrauding his victims, comprising Non-Governmental Organisations, NGOs and individuals by advertising an intervention project through his NGO, Theobarth Global Foundation, claiming that the Ford Foundation was offering a grant of $20,000, 000. 000 to assist the less-privileged in society. He allegedly beguiled his victims to subscribe as beneficiaries of the phony grant by asking them to pay for registration forms and clusters. Each subscriber was made to pay N1,800,000.

Through this arrangement, Mr Ebonyi allegedly raked in N1,391,040, 274.31.

His subscribers are innocent and unsuspecting Nigerians and NGOs across the country.

Investigations by the EFCC showed that Ford Foundation had no arrangement, grant, relationship or business with Mr Ebonyi.

The Foundation pointedly disclaimed him and his NGO stressing that it had no link whatsoever with them.

The Commission has also traced five properties he acquired as proceeds of his criminal dealings.

Mr Ebonyi is still reportedly reaching his subscribers on some social media platforms to market his spurious grant from Ford Foundation. He would be charged to court as soon as investigations are conclude

We didn’t cause accident along Jibia border — Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, has dismissed as false the claim that its operatives caused an accident in Jibia town, Jibia Local Government of Katsina State.

The spokesman of the unit, Isa Suleiman, stated this in a statement issued yesterday in Katsina.

He said that the incident occurred when a J5 bus driver who was trying to dodge customs operatives, rammed into some bystanders and hit a teenager around Tudun Wada Primary School in the town.

Mr Suleiman said: “I am aware that we have a team along the Jibia border that is within 40km radius.

“The officials of the NCS didn’t cause the incident you are referring to as alleged.

“It was caused by the reckless driving of the driver of that J5 bus.”

He said that some unscrupulous elements were hell-bent on twisting the narration.

Mr Suleiman added, “It is a fact that smugglers are unhappy with our resolve to ensure that illicit items do not find their way into the country.

“These smugglers are looking for any opportunity to smear the NCS name through a false campaign built on mischief.

“We are a service of repute and we sympathize with the families of the victims and an investigation is ongoing to unravel the cause of the incident in collaboration with relevant agencies.”

Mr Suleiman vowed that whoever is found guilty would face the consequences of his actions.

He, however, said, “All campaigns of calumny by smugglers will not deter the unit from enforcing the directives of the Federal Government.

“We are more determined to make the Zone unbearable for smugglers.”

Recall that some national dailies on Monday reported that some customs operatives allegedly caused the death of a teenager during the Jibia anti-smuggling operation on Saturday.

CBN uncovers $2.4 billion false forex overdue claim pressuring the naira

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has uncovered invalid foreign overdue claims totalling $2.4 billion, which have pressured the naira for long and spooked the currency market, Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso said yesterday.

Mr Cardoso said the discovery was made after an audit by the consultant that the Central Bank engaged brought several shady deals to light.

After seven years of being concealed from public knowledge, the audited accounts of the CBN became public last year during which auditors revealed a $7 billion backlog of unmet dollar demand from investors and currency users.

That has created an overhang in the market which, unless cleared, could keep the naira pressured, leaving the currency on a continued free fall against the dollar.

The CBN hired Deloitte to investigate the forex claims to get a true picture of things, Mr Cardoso said during an interview with local TV Arise, broadcast yesterday.

The Deloitte report found that as much as $2.4 billion of the said backlog are false claims, with claimers unable to present import documents in some instances, he said.

“We had had reasons to believe we needed to take a harder look at these obligations. So we contracted Deloitte management consultants to do forensics of all these obligations and to actually tell us what was valid and what was not,” Mr Cardoso said.

“The result that came out of this was startling in a great respect. It was startling. We discovered that of the roughly $7 billion, about $2.4 billion had issues, which we believe had no business being there and the infractions on that ranged from so many things, for example not having valid import documents and in some cases, entities that do not exist.

“There were account parties who had asked for foreign exchange and got more than they asked for. There were some who didn’t even ask for any and got. So there were whole loads of infractions there,” he added.

Nigeria’s naira has been on a much-prolonged retreat, dating back to the pandemic days, against the dollar as a heap of unmet obligations to investors and exporters continues to strain the currency, which has weakened to a dross.

Naira finished 2023 as the world’s worst-performing currency, weighed down by illiquidity and commonplace speculative practices among market operators and street traders.

Currency users are having to throng the parallel market, where the exchange rate is higher but the dollar is in greater supply, to have their needs met.

President Bola Tinubu set out shortly after his inauguration last year to liberalise the foreign exchange system, which has been bogged down by an unorthodox regime that pegged the exchange rate rather than allowing the naira to trade freely and find price discovery.

The CBN collapsed the multiple naira exchange rates, adopted under the immediate past CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, into a single window as part of a slew of currency reforms that followed. It went further to initiate its first devaluation round under the current administration around mid-June.

Those market-friendly moves were aimed at courting international investors but they are hurting Nigerians at home, considering that they are adding fuel to an already elevated inflation by making imported goods and raw materials much more expensive.

In the week that just went by, naira’s official rate dived by over 36 per cent, dropping to a lower level than the street rate, after the CBN overhauled its approach to setting the rate in the official market and came hard on traders involved in misguiding the public with distorted prices.

Between the point  Mr Tinubu took office and now, the naira has depreciated by approximately 68 per cent, 50 per cent in 2023 alone.

But banks also have been fingered in the speculative activities that are pressuring the naira. Mr Cardoso gave a tall order to banks at the end of January, ordering them to increase dollar supply to the market by ensuring their foreign exchange net open position does not exceed 20 per cent of shareholders’ funds unimpeded by losses.

Put differently, the gross amount of loans lenders can grant in foreign currency must not exceed one-fifth of their shareholders’ funds, which could force banks to make the remaining cash available to the market, a push that could boost liquidity in the system.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Mr Cardoso said at the interview that those making invalid claims of $2.4 billion would not get anything. “As they were identified, we wrote to the authorised dealers to come in and explain what the situation was. Sadly, quite frankly, much of those has not been disputed to our satisfaction.”So far, the apex bank has settled requests in the neighbourhood of $2.3 billion including those from airlines operating in the country, he went further to say. That leaves the balance of the genuine arrears of dollar demand at $2.2 billion. Mr Cardoso assured that the remainder will be cleared very shortly.

“I think we are at the end of this, to put it that way,” he said.

Last month, Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, told Bloomberg the government had opened talks with the World Bank with a view to securing a lifeline of between $1 billion and $1.5 billion from the World Bank to rescue the naira.

Presidency, Atiku clash over Tinubu’s economic policies

The Presidency and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday, traded words over the state of the Nigerian economy and the monetary policies of President Bola Tinubu.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said there is hunger in the land as basic commodities, including bread, are becoming out of reach for average Nigerians.

However, in a swift response, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Atiku has embarked on a mission as a poor opposition-in-chief, noting that the reforms the Tinubu government will cause immediate pains but will usher in an era of prosperity in the medium and long terms.

Atiku blamed the economic challenges in the country on the “poor policies” of Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and the eventual winner of the last poll.

“Tinubu’s poor response to Nigeria’s economic challenges is setting the stage for a prolonged and deeper domestic economic crisis,” the ex-VP said.

“His economic policies, drawn from a so-called renewed hope agenda, are ironically dashing hopes, creating pain and causing despair.

“The private sector is shrinking by the day as small businesses are emasculated and as Multi-National Companies, confused and weary of the economy, leave Nigeria in droves. The intense cost of living pressures has created more misery for the poor in towns and villages.”

Atiku also criticised the 2024 N28. 7trn maiden budget of Tinubu, saying it is “bereft of concrete ideas and actions that would support Nigeria’s journey toward economic transformation”.

The opposition leader said Tinubu has “no capacity to deal with the adverse and disastrous impact of the new subsidy regime on the people and businesses and the new foreign exchange policy, which provides for a free-floating exchange rate. His initiatives are literally uninformed, arbitrary, and chaotic”.

Atiku also said, Tinubu came into office unprepared and his men have found a pastime blaming the economic woes of the country on the previous governments.

“Tinubu and his economic management team must swallow their pride, admit their missteps and failures, and follow those who know the terrain. They must act fast before the economy sinks deeper into the abyss,” he said.

On his part, Onanuga, in a statement, said, “Nigerians can easily see through the hypocrisy of Alhaji Atiku, who is accusing President Tinubu of poor response to the nation’s challenges and causing pains and despair, didn’t offer any better policy options in his run for the Presidency different from the economic reform agenda being pursued by President Tinubu.

He said having removed petrol subsidy on the day he was inaugurated on May 29, 2023, and later harmonised the exchange rates, the President and his economic team have been “working vigorously to harmonise the rates and also end the rampant and criminal arbitrage that the multiple windows allowed”.

“President Tinubu acknowledged, on different occasions, that the reforms his government is implementing will cause immediate pains, but will usher in an era of prosperity in the medium and long terms,” the presidential aide noted.

“Atiku’s claims that the private sector is shrinking and that multinational companies are leaving our companies in ‘droves’ are not grounded on facts.

“His claim that the government’s policies have created intense cost of living pressures are also not grounded on facts as recent comparative cost of living indices show that Nigerians still enjoy the lowest cost of living in Africa.

“Atiku should be honest enough to admit that President Tinubu inherited a weak economy, which to all intents and purposes and to ensure the survival of our country needs a complete overhaul.

“The economy was plagued by decades of significant fiscal deficits, a low revenue base, high external and domestic debts, and huge debt service burden,” the statement added.

The presidential aide said his principal has been focused on solving Nigeria’s economic and security challenges and has embarked on fiscal and tax policy reforms that will drive speedy recovery and spur economic growth.

“While President Tinubu and his able team are working very hard to make our country better, ensure our economy is stronger and more competitive, Atiku Abubakar and his cohorts may continue to belly ache.

However, they cannot stop the serious work of nation-building already set in motion by President Tinubu,” Onanuga said.

Electricity: National grid restored after partial disturbance –TC

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said, the national grid has been fully restored after a partial disturbance at about 11:21 a. m. on Sunday.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’S General Manager Public Affairs in a statement in Abuja recently said that the company initiated immediate restoration of the affected part of the grid.

”The Transmission Company of Nigeria,  hereby state that the grid experienced a partial disturbance at about 11:21hrs with Ibom power islanded feeding Eket, Ekim, Itu and Uyo transmission substations, during the period of partial disturbance, ” she said.

Mbah said that prior to the incident, total generation on the grid was 3,901.25 Mega Watts (MW) at 8 a. m, a little over three hours before time of partial collapse.

According to her, It is important to note that low power generation has persisted since January to date, exacerbating daily due to the lingering gas constraint.

According to the National Control Centre (NCC), the Internet of Things (IoT) revealed that just before the partial disturbance, which occurred at Sapele, Steam and Egbin Substations lost 29.32MW and 343.84MW at 11:20:14 hrs and 11:20:17hrs respectively, totalling 373.16MW.

”This, combined with the current low power generation due to gas constraints, caused the imbalance leading to the partial system disturbance.

”Gas constraints continue to impact grid flexibility and stability. Ensuring sufficient gas supply to power generating stations is crucial for grid stability, ” she said.

Mbah further said that sufficient generation allows for better grid management in the event of sudden generation losses like this, adding that TCN would investigate the cause of tripping of Sapele Steam and Egbin power generating units.

CJN allegedly nominates daughter as Judge six months after appointing son as High Court Judge

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has been embroiled in allegations of nepotism and cronyism as reports emerge that he has nominated his daughter, Justice Victoria Oluwakemi, for a judicial position in the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

This comes after the CJN was previously accused of securing appointments for his son, Ariwoola Olukayode Jnr, and other relatives within the judiciary.

Documents obtained by Peoples Gazette, along with information from judiciary sources, revealed the nomination of Justice Victoria Oluwakemi.

The CJN had earlier faced criticism for securing a judgeship for his son, Ariwoola Olukayode Jnr, in the Federal High Court.

The reported pattern of appointments within the CJN’s family includes his younger brother, Adebayo Ariwoola, who serves as the auditor of the National Judicial Council, and his nephew, Lateef Ganiyu, who recently gained promotion to the Court of Appeal.

Observers noted that several other relatives hold various positions across the judiciary bureaucracy, raising concerns about favouritism.

The CJN’s nomination of his daughter reportedly followed a letter from the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Husseini Baba-Yusuf, informing him of 12 available positions in the court.

In response to the letter dated January 18, 2024, Baba-Yusuf requested nominations from the CJN, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau.

The states mentioned for nominations were Bauchi, Bayelsa, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Taraba, and Zamfara.

However, discrepancies were noted as Oyo already had two judges in the FCT High Court, and the state was given an additional slot to accommodate the CJN’s daughter.

Critics argued that the nomination raises questions about judicial independence and fair representation as the CJN continues to face accusations of leveraging his position to advance the careers of his relatives.

The reported nomination of a junior magistrate, Justice Victoria Oluwakemi, who has limited experience, further intensifies concerns among judiciary workers and observers.

Imo Govt Uzodimma kicks off free trade zone project in Egbema communities

●Seeks cooperation of communities

●Begins delineation of land

Governor Hope Uzodimma has kicked off his second term on a good note as he begins the implementation of the Orashi Energy Free Trade Zone in Mmahu and Abacheke communities in Ohaji-Egbema LGA, even as the government called for cooperation from the host communities.

The state government made the call during two separate meetings with community leaders in Mmahu and Abacheke communities held at the Mmahu Town Hall and the Palace of the Ezeala of Abacheke, respectively. The community leaders at the meetings included the traditional rulers, Town Union Chairmen, Chiefs, youth leaders, and women leaders.

Addressing the community leaders on the project, the immediate past Minister of State for Education, Rt. Hon. Goodluck Nanah Opiah, who led a team set up by Governor Hope Uzodimma, told the leaders that the Free Trade Zone will be located in their communities and that the government was seeking their cooperation to deliver the signature project, which is planned to bring industrialization and boost economic activities.

He said: “We are here today to inform the communities that the government is about to begin the implementation of the Orashi Energy Free Trade Zone, which the governor last year promised he would do. The project will be sited in Mmahu and Abacheke communities, and we are here to seek your cooperation.

“You may recall that the governor came up with this lofty project during his first term, and he has the burning desire to actualise the project in his second term. The governor had a lot in his plans, but there were challenges at every turn. Nothing was spared in a devilish effort to bring the government down, but thanks to God Almighty that we overcame all of them.

“The benefits from this project will be innumerable. Apart from launching the communities into a new realm of unprecedented economic activities, the host communities will now be on the map of Nigeria as places that have developed. Ships will come in and leave because of the Oguta Lake and Orashi River sea route to the Atlantic Ocean, and we will no longer struggle to transport our agricultural produce or struggle to find markets for them. With time, import and export will be taken for granted, and we will see great wealth in our communities and Imo State in general.”

Thanking the communities for their enthusiasm and cooperation so far, Opiah said the committee will ensure that no community is cheated in any way, adding that the governor does not cut corners and the government will pay adequate compensation to the communities, farmers and property owners on the affected lands after the assessment work has been done.

He assured the communities that the governor is committed to the dredging project and the Orashi Energy Free Trade Zone, adding that the projects are so dear to the governor that he set up the committee a day after his swearing-in ceremony to champion the implementation of the project.

Opiah said: “We are here on behalf of the government to discuss this all-important project and to tell you about the delineation and mapping out exercise. We will start with the external delineation, which comprises taking the geographical points and coordinates, cutting out the boundaries, and separating the proposed project site from the rest of the community land. After that, we will do the internal delineation to determine who owns each land, and then, the assessment and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will follow. When the actual size of the land needed for the project is properly delineated, the communities involved will be compensated. It is true that all lands belong to the government, but the governor does not take lands for development without paying adequate compensation to the communities.

“When the governor came up with this project, many people claimed he was playing politics, but I told them it was not so. Interestingly, the governor set up a committee a day after his swearing-in ceremonies. Today, we are here to discuss the implementation of the project. This project is one of the legacy projects of the governor, and it will bring the development we so much need,” he said.

On his part, the Surveyor General of Imo State, Surveyor Bob Uzodimma, who is also a member of the committee, thanked the communities for their enthusiasm and cooperation with the committee so far, adding that the project will bring development to the area.

He said: “This project will bring urbanisation and development, and that is why we are asking you to cooperate with the government. When you go to America and see how beautiful it is, remember that it is some people’s land that the government acquired to bring the development. Lagos State is developing, but remember that all the development is built on some people’s land, and I urge you all to open your heart and embrace this development that is coming to us.”

In their separate responses, community leaders from Mmahu and Abacheke said they were committed to cooperating with the state government for the actualization of the project.

Thanking the delegation from the state government, a notable community leader from Mmahu, Prof. Victor Koga said: “Free trade zone is one project no community will make a mistake about. Mmahu and Abacheke are two great communities, and our resolve is that we will receive this project with all our heart. We cannot miss it because it is the kind of project we need.”

The Paramount Ruler of Abacheke community, Ezeala Sally B. Ikeji expressed happiness that the government decided to site the project on their land, assuring that the community would cooperate with the government. “We want peace and development, and we are ready for development. We have already embraced the free trade zone with all our hearts,” he said.

On his part, the traditional ruler of Mmahu Autonomous Community, Eze Augustine Ikechukwu Iwuogu, who was represented by Ezeali Dr. Nkem Nwoke, the Traditional Prime Minister of the community, said that the community welcomed the project and would cooperate with the government.

He called on the government to ensure that the project was delivered in record time, so the people would justify giving their land to the government.

The Court of Appeal, Abuja has ordered the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) to pay the sum of N540 million damages awarded against it for alleged defamation of Prophet Emmanuel Omale and his wife, Deborah.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Yusuf Halilu of a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court had, in a judgment on Oct. 4, 2022, awarded the sum against FCMB.

Justice Halilu held that the bank recklessly breached the duty of care it owe to Omale of the Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry, his wife and the church.

The judge agreed that the bank made a false claim that former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu paid N573 million to the church’s account.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal, in a ruling on Feb. 1, rejected FCMB’s request for a stay of execution of the judgment, pending the determination of its appeal, as prayed in a motion on notice it filed.

Instead, a three-member panel presided over by Justice Muhammed Shuaibu, granted a conditional stay of the execution of the judgment by ordering the bank to pay the judgment sum of N540 million into an interest yielding account in the name of the court’s chief registrar.

In an enrolled copy of the ruling sighted on Sunday, the appellate court said: “The application is granted as prayed in terms of the first prayer in the appellant’s motion filed on March 3, 2022.

“Consequently, conditional stay of execution of the judgment is hereby granted to the appellant.”

According to the appellate court, the condition being that the judgment sum shall be deposited into an interest yielding bank account of the court to be opened by the chief registrar of this court within 48 hours of the grant of this order.

The panel then adjourned further hearing till a date to be communicated to parties by the court’s registry.

The conditional stay granted by the Court of Appeal was alternatively conceded by the respondents; Omale, his wife and the church, in their counter affidavit to the appellant’s motion, which they had actually sought to be dismissed.

NAN reports that the Oct. 4 judgment by Justice Halilu was on a defamation suit marked: FCT/HC/CV2541/2020 filed by Omale, his wife and the church against the bank.

During the investigation of Magu by the Justice Isa Salami-led presidential investigation panel, it was reported that an investigation by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) revealed that the ex-EFCC chairman paid N573 million into Omale’s church’s account with which a property was allegedly bought in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).Justice Halilu, in the judgment noted that evidence before his court showed that the bank admitted error in its report, to the NFIU, of entries in Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry’s account.

The judge further noted that the bank claimed that the purported N573 million was wrongly reflected as credit entry in Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry’s account by its reporting system, which it recently upgraded.

The judge noted that the bank admitted the error, which occasioned incalculable damage to the reputation of the claimants, both within and outside the country.

He held that the claimants provided sufficient evidence to establish case of negligence against the bank. Justice Halilu proceeded to award N200 million as aggravated damages; N140,500,000 as specific damages and N200 million as general damages.

LP, APGA in War of words over lawmakers’ performances

Ahead of the 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, the Labour Party and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are at war of words over the legislative performances of their parliamentarians at the state and national assemblies.

While the Labour Party chided APGA that its spheres of influence is limited to Anambra State, it claimed that the Labour Party has a national spread.

The National Publicity Secretary of APGA,  MaziEjimoforOpara, had claimed that “Labour Party faithfuls in Anambra State and National Assembly are mere disgruntled elements and power mongers with misplaced priorities and bunch of jokers with no clear-cut directions as to why they were elected to occupy public offices.”

But in a swift reaction, ChibuzoUdekigbo, Director of Communication of the Labour Party said that his party is a national party.

According to Udekigbo, ”At the National Assembly where Labour Party has eight serving members from Anambra State; three are chairmen of various Standing Committees and Deputy Minority Whip; while APGA got none. APGA is a regional party in Anambra State alone.

“It is obvious that Prof. Soludo has entered panic attack, for he is aware that the 2025 governorship election is around the corner and Labour Party is set to rescue Ndi-Anambra from Governor Soludo’s impoverishment policies.”

The Labour party challenged APGA to publish the profiles of its parliamentarians in both the state and national assemblies, stressing, “the academic and professional profiles of our elected national and state assemblies members are quite excellent. Among them are medical doctors, professors, lawyers, engineers, and other professionals who are performing credibly well in their legislative responsibilities. We challenge MaziOpara to publish the profile of APGA elected members, both at the state and national assemblies.”

On the legislative performances of the lawmakers from both parties, the Labour Party said, “It is on record that Senator Tony Nwoye had an unprecedented empowerment programme, and three state Assembly members of Labour Party, Mazi Paul Obu, Hon. Nigeria Mbachu and Barr. Jude Umennajiego, also, recently empowered their constituents in different categories. Senator Victor Umeh and Prof. ObyLilianOrogbu shared bags of rice, as palliatives from the federal government.

“Again, we challenge the National Publicity Secretary of APGA to publish the empowerment programme done by his party members.”

Flouanting the legislative performances of Labour Party lawmakers at the Senate, the party said that Senator Victor Umeh has moved several Motions on the floor of the Senate, which include his intervention during the demolition of some properties in Igbo dominated areas in Lagos State.

Also, Nwoye has moved several Motions, which include the “rehabilitation of Onitsha-Otuocha-Ayamelum-Adani Road. The road has been rehabilitated and being enjoyed by motorists.”

Also, the Labour Party said that at the Anambra State House of Assembly that EmekaIdu and  Peter ‘MacPee’ Aniekwe jointly moved a Motion for the dualisation of Onitsha-Otuocha-Ayamelum-Adani Road, which received legislative attention, while Peter Mac Pee’ Aniekwe just over the weekend, commissioned a borehole at Nando, challenging APGA to state what APGA lawmakers have done at the state and national assemblies.

Labour Party also said that AfamOgene moved a Motion to include some very important roads that one of its member at the national assembly, Prof. ObyLilianOrogbu had moved a Motion for capturing of UNIZIK staff on IPPIS and payment of their over two years salaries, and presented two petitions on behalf of her constituents

Hon. UcheOkonkwo was said to have renovated two schools in Idemmili; namely, Community Primary school, UgamumaObosi and Notre Dame High School, Abatete, while Hon. AzubuikeUdemezue has two motions on road rehabilitations to his name, which are currently being rehabilitated. “This is to mention but a few, as we challenge the factional National Publicity Secretary of APGA to publish the legislative achievements of APGA elected members.”

“We send the errand boy of the APGA-led government on an errand to his benefactor, the governor of Anambra, to leave Labour Party alone and focus on tackling the insecurity, poor medical and school facilities in Anambra, and desist from destroying the goods of petty traders in Awka and Ekwulobia, and fighting the Traditional institution, Religious institutions and opposition parties.”

ONSA Bars NSCDC, Immigration, Fire Service from wearing camouflage

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), has directed the Federal Ministry of Interior to immediately withdraw all camouflage uniforms from security and law enforcement agencies under its supervision.

ONSA’s directive was in a circular dated January 16, 2024, and addressed to the Minister of Interior.

The circular titled: “Observation on Proliferation in the Use of Camouflage Uniforms by Other Security Agencies in Nigeria”, was signed by the National Security Adviser (NSA), MallamNuhuRibadu.

According to NSA, personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), together with the Federal Fire Service, among others, are to discontinue henceforth using the camouflage uniforms at the disposal, following the directive issued by ONSA.

The NSA observed that the persistent proliferation of camouflaged uniforms by these security and law enforcement agencies makes the outfit easily accessible to criminals and impostors, while also exacerbating the already challenging security situation in the country.

“Case in point was the recent unfortunate attack on communities in Plateau State, where the perpetrators were reportedly dressed in camouflage uniforms.

“This further underscores the need to ensure that the ban placed on camouflage uniforms by security agencies other than the Armed Forces and the Police on special occasions, such as joint operations, is strictly enforced”, he said.

Ribadu urged the interior minister to take necessary steps and place stringent measures to ensure that the ban on camouflage uniforms is upheld, enforced and strictly complied with by all security and enforcement establishments under his supervision

Super Eagles’ victory aligns with Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda –NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said Super Eagles’ quarter-final victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was in tandem with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘renewed hope agenda.’

Ibrahim Gusau, NFF president, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abidjan on Saturday.

NAN reports  that the Super Eagles are through to the semi-finals of the AFCON after a hard-fought 1-0 win over giant-killers Angola in Abidjan on Friday.

This was after a lovely assist by Moses Simon, slipping in a lovely pass for Ademola Lookman, who slotted calmly beyond goalkeeper Guilherme da Costa to score the only goal for Nigeria in the 41st minute.

Gusau expressed gratitude to the President Tinubu for his support to the Super Eagles.

He noted that the president’s unflinching support for the team showed how committed he was in the area of sports development, especially football.

“You heard what he said. He said, ‘Boys go there, believe in me.

‘You don’t have any problem and whatever issues you are facing, just believe in me. Go and do the job and you’ll see the result.’

“That’s exactly what he told them, and you can see them doing the job.

By the grace of God, I know he is going to reward them handsomely, which has never happened before in the history of Nigeria.

“We promised him that we are going to give him the trophy, and by the grace of God, we are going to do just that,” he said.

The NFF boss called on all Nigerians to continue to suport the team.

“We have just two matches to go and by the grace of God we will continue to do what we are doing.

We call on all Nigerians to pray for us because prayer is the key to whatever we are doing.

So, we call on all Nigerians to continue to support us with prayers and by the grace of God,” he said.

Aisha Falode, NFF Executive Board Member, said the NFF was working in compliance with the mandate of President Tinubu, who instructed them to go and win the cup for Nigeria.

“We got that mandate, ‘go win the cup for Nigeria,’ and we are on the way to doing that.

It is a mantra of a renewed hope.

“A renewed Super Eagles for a renewed Nigeria, with one mandate; to bring the 2023 AFCON trophy back to Nigeria for Nigerians to celebrate.

“That’s what we are going to do. We are on our way to the final. We love Nigeria,” she said.

NAN reports that Nigeria will face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final between Cape Verde and South Africa for a place in the final.

The tournament which began on Jan. 13 in Cote d’Ivoire will end on Feb. 11

Tinubu’s administration needs support of Nigerians to defeat terrorists, kidnappers –Gbajabiamila

Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, says Nigerians need to come together for the country to defeat terrorists and kidnappers ravaging the country.

He also assured Nigerians that the benefits of fuel subsidy removal would be reaped soon.

Mr Gbajabiamila gave the assurance after casting his vote at polling unit 014, Ward 08 at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial School, Surulere, Lagos state, in the House of Representatives by-election in the constituency on Saturday.

The chief of staff in his reaction to the current economic situation being faced by Nigerians, said the President and his administration remained concerned about the plight of the people.

He, however, noted that it was a universal issue and must be handled with all caution.

According to him, the challenges we are facing are because some fundamentals were missing in the first place.

“It is those economic fundamentals that this administration is trying to put in place, including fuel subsidy removal, which was a national concession that it must be removed.

“I assure you that the benefits of subsidy removal will be reaped soon. It’s not immediate, but the President knows what he is doing, and at the end of the day, everything will work out fine.”

On insecurity, the chief of staff urged Nigerians to support the President and his administration rather than pointing fingers and making negative criticisms.

Mr Gbajabiamila stated that security remained everyone’s concern but assured that the President is deeply concerned and at the forefront of it all.

“This administration needs the full cooperation of the people, and in so doing, we will all defeat these kidnappers and terrorists.

“Therefore, we need to come together for the better and, by so doing, make Nigeria a great nation that we will all be proud of.”

Speaking on the by-election, Mr Gbajabiamila said the process had been peaceful and smooth from the point of accreditation and voting.

He advised the winner to be focused, dedicated and committed to the people of Surulere.

According to him, legislative work comes with a lot of experience and having the people’s interest at heart.

“It may seem difficult at first, but once you put your head down and focus on the people, especially on national issues, success is assured.”

Twelve candidates of different political parties are scrambling for 121,111 votes of registered voters with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the election.

The seat became vacant due to the resignation of the former occupant, Mr Gbajabiamila, who, after winning, was appointed by Mr Tinubu as his chief of staff.

INEC suspends rerun elections in 20 polling units in Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Kano

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has suspended rerun election in 20 polling units cutting across Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Kano

It said this was due to disruptions, irregularities and abduction of election officials.

The commission disclosed this in a statement by Sam Olumekun, national commissioner and chairman, information and voter education committee, on Saturday in Abuja.

The affected constituencies, according to Mr Olumekun, include Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom; Enugu South 1 State Constituency, Enugu State; and Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency, Kano State.

MrOlumekun said that elections in two polling units: Village Hall, Edem Urua 003 in Ini LGA and Village Hall Mbiabong Ikot Udo 003 in Ikono LGA, where all election materials were carted away by hoodlums, have been suspended.

In Enugu South 1 State Constituency, Enugu State l, Mr Olumekun also announced the suspension of elections in all eight polling units where the original results sheets were not available for inspection by voters before the commencement of polls.

For Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency, Kano State, he said that the commission also suspended elections in all 10 polling units in Kunchi LGA due to invasion, vandalisation and disruption by thugs.

According to him, the decision of the commission aligns with the provisions of Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

“Further, necessary measures for the affected constituencies will be announced after the commission’s meeting on Monday.”

“INEC invites the security agencies to investigate the incidents, while the commission commits to thoroughly interrogating any breaches involving its officials,” MrOlumekun said.

The commission had earlier said it was monitoring and investigating reported cases of disruption in the ongoing rerun and by-elections in the three states.

No plans to convert domiciliary accounts into Naira –CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it has no plans to convert domiciliary account holdings valued at 30 billion dollars into Naira.

Mrs Hakama Sidi-Ali, CBN’s Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, made the clarification in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

Sidi-Ali’s statement was a reaction to a media report that the apex bank planned to convert domiciliary accounts into Naira, to address the unending depreciation of the local currency.

“The attention of the CBN has been drawn to a story published by a national newspaper, alleging that the Federal Government is considering converting 30 billion dollars domiciliary deposits to Naira.

CBN Fixes $1m as capital requirements for International Money Transfer Operators

“This allegation is absolutely false and aims to trigger panic in the foreign exchange market, which the CBN is working assiduously to stabilise, as evidenced by its recent work and policy directions.

“Similar false narratives have been spread on the work of the CBN over the past few months and it is clear that vested interests are determined to sabotage our efforts,” she said.

She assured that the CBN was working to build confidence and would never do anything to undermine the currency and the economy.

She urged all stakeholders to disregard stories aimed at causing panic in the system and see them as acts of national sabotage.

“We wish to advise, in the strongest terms, against the peddling of false reports that have the potential to be disruptive to the economy.

“The CBN is the only designated authority for monetary policy changes and will always advise on any policy changes before they are brought into operation,” she said.

The Naira has been on a free fall in the last few days, exchanging at N1,500 to the dollar.

This has created panic among some stakeholders who have been calling on the apex bank to take urgent steps to strengthen the Naira.
