Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after 27 months in custody.

This followed the ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja that granted Kyari two weeks bail.

The court said the two-week bail was to allow Kyari to return home to conclude his mother’s burial rites.

The court subsequently set Friday, May 31, for the determination of his bail application in the trial over drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following his arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.

Lawyers to sue Tinubu for bringing back Old National Anthem

Tinubu

The Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP), a civil society organization, has announced plans to sue President Bola Tinubu over the recently signed National Anthem Act 2024.

President Bola Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law on Wednesday, reinstating the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

However, the reintroduced old national anthem has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians, with stakeholders calling for proper consultation before making the decision.

ALDRAP’s secretary, Tonye Jaja, in a statement on Friday, declared that the enactment of the National Anthem Act did not meet the constitutional requirements.

The group argued that the public was not allowed to contribute, as they were during the enactment of the previous national anthem in 1978.

Additionally, the bill was not formally transmitted from the president to the Senate president and the speaker of the House of Representatives.

The statement partly read, “No public hearing was held before the said legislation was enacted as required under Section 60 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.

“Members of the public were not invited to make their contributions, as was done when the other national anthem was enacted in the year 1978.

“There was no letter of transmission of the said bill from the president to the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives.

“The expenditures associated with the National Anthem Act, 2024 (which was done on May 29, 2024, and on other dates) are not captured in the Budget of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Act, 2024 (as can be attested to by the accountant-general of the federation), and therefore the said National Anthem Act, 2024, should be declared illegal.”

The organization emphasized that the costs associated with implementing the new national anthem, including manpower, updating official documents, and related expenses, would place a significant burden on ordinary citizens, particularly without a corresponding increase in income.

Other respondents to be named in the case include, the speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Senate President.

Dangote refinery exports 45,000 metric tons of Jet Fuel to Europe

Dangote Refinery

The Dangote refinery in Nigeria has marked a significant milestone by exporting its first jet fuel cargo to Europe.

This milestone is pivotal in the global energy market, underscoring the rapid expansion of the facility’s operations.

On Friday, S&P Global Commodity Insights reported that BP is moving 45,000 metric tons of jet fuel from the Dangote refinery to Rotterdam via the Doric Breeze.

This export marks the refinery’s debut in the European market, following a substantial 120,000 metric ton tender.

According to information, “BP cargo” denotes the jet fuel shipment acquired and currently being transported by British Petroleum (BP).

This groundbreaking development involves BP leading the transportation of 45,000 metric tons of jet fuel to Rotterdam, signifying a pivotal moment for the new 650,000 b/d complex and potentially reshaping global energy dynamics.

The shipment, loaded from Lekki on May 27, highlights the refinery’s swift increase in production and its compliance with European jet A1 standards, potentially altering West African trade flows.

“Two sources confirmed that the Doric Breeze ship marked the inaugural BP cargo, loading 45,000 mt of supply from Lekki May 27, according to S&P Global Commodities at Sea data.

“Cepsa also secured part of the tender, with the Spanish refiner expected to deliver supply to the continent imminently, traders said.

“Neither of the companies were available for comments on purchases of jet fuel from the refinery, while a representative from Dangote previously confirmed to S&P Global Commodity Insights that the refinery has complied with European jet A1 standards since the product first started being shipped within Africa in April.

“The inaugural European shipment demonstrates the growing reach of products from the 650,000 b/d Dangote refinery as it has rapidly ramped up operations and aims to shake up established West African trade flows.

“Dangote has exported six jet fuel/kerosene cargoes starting April 8, with all material delivered to Senegal, Togo or Ghana, according to CAS data.

BP is also expected to continue supplying jet fuel to the West African market with product from the refinery,” sources said.

European traders cautioned that the influx of fresh jet fuel flows from Nigeria could worsen existing market weakness due to oversupply.

“IPOB has no chance to attack anyone; those responsible for this attack are politicians; they are planning to create problems in peaceful Enyimba City, so the governor of Abia State must be careful; they are coming to create a crisis in Aba.

Our reporter gathered that the gunmen who were said to have stormed the military unit at about 6.45am, also burnt the unit as well as a patrol van parked in the unit.

Similar attack happened barely two weeks after some gunmen also killed two soldiers at a military unit located at the Aba main motor park.

The Incident has caused pandemonium in the area, forcing people to remain in door for few of reprisals from the military.

However their was total compliance to the sit at home at Aba as motorists deserted the roads in all areas of the city, including schools, markets and other business centres were shut.

Most students who were scheduled to take the WAEC Mathematics examination could not make it as there were no motorists to take them to their centres.

The situation became chaotic in the area as the roads were deserted and soldiers gave hot chase to motorists and passers by along Ukaegbu,Umuola, New Umuahia, Omoba, Ehere, Ururuka roads and Opobo junction which are adjoining roads to military units.

Speaking, a resident from the area, told journalists that they are still making efforts to relocate from the Obikabia area because of fear of reprisal attack by the angry soldiers. He said that as early as 6.45am, there was heavy gunfire around the military unit at Obikabia junction.

He said “when I peeped through the windows of my apartment, I discovered it was an attack on the soldiers. The unit and patrol van were set on fire. The roads are still deserted, people are making efforts to relocate from the Obikabia junction area because of fear of the unknown from the angry soldiers.” The resident stated.

He regretted that this is happening barely two weeks after some gunmen also killed two soldiers at a military unit located at the Aba main motor park, along Asa road, Aba.

In Umuahia compliance of the sit at home was high as banks, civil servants, traders, offices, obeyed the directive by staying in their houses to observe the day. Few tricycle operators and private car owners were seen on the roads.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Public Relations Officer, 14 Brigade, Ohafia, Lt. Innocent Omale on phone was unsuccessful as he did not pick his calls neither did he returned back the calls.

In a quick reaction, the President General, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, the apex sociopolitical youth group in South East zone, Comrade Goodluck Ibem through a press release he signed condemned the attack on Military checkpoint in Obikabia junction, Aba which he said left some soldiers dead.

He described the killing as barbaric, wicked noting that the attacks are the handiwork of criminal elements hiding under the cover of Biafra struggle to perpetuate crime and destabilize Governor Otti’s government adding that their plans is dead on arrival

“It is very unfortunate that the soldiers who are peacefully performing their constitutional duties of providing security in the area will be attacked by gunmen without any form of provocation whatsoever. This is completely unacceptable.

“This is the second time a military checkpoint will be attacked by gunmen in the state. This is a strong confirmation that enemies of Abia who are not happy with the transformational performance of Governor Alex Otti and are at work to destabilize the state.

“These persons are not happy that Abians now have good road network, improved security and other democracy dividends which the governor is bringing to the door steps of Abia people to make life enjoyable.

“We sympathize and commiserate with the military over this great loss and we urge the general public to work with the government to bring the culprits to book.

Justice C.N. Wali’s court issued the order in response to a lawsuit filed by lawmakers loyal to Governor SiminaayiFubara, led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, and two others, Sokari Goodboy and Orubienimigha Timothy.

According to the court document sighted by Our correspondent, the lawsuit named 25 lawmakers as defendants (1st to 25th) and additionally listed the Rivers State Governor, Attorney-General, and Chief Judge as defendants (26th to 28th) in the legal action.

Uzodimma condemns killing of soldiers by hoodlums in Abia

The Governor of Imo State and Chairman, South East Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has condemned in very strong terms the killing of soldiers who were on lawful duty in Aba, Abia State by hoodlums masquerading as members of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

The soldiers were ambushed and then killed by the gang of criminals who claimed to be enforcing a sit at home order in the South East.

Governor Uzodimma who addressed the media on Thursday in Government House Owerri had condemned the dastardly act which he said occurred without provocation.

Governor Uzodimma urged the security agencies to “go all out and ensure that those behind it are caught and brought to book.”

He bemoaned what happened as “unfortunate, without any reason as innocent people doing their lawful duty were gunned down.”

He said the unfortunate situation was a major setback on the peace process which the Governors of the South East have been pursuing vigorously by engaging the Federal government, security agencies and other critical stakeholders on how best to resolve the problem of insecurity in the South East.

Governor Uzodimma regretted that the action will erroneously portray the people of South East in bad light “as if we don’t have sympathy for human lives or that the peace process being pursued is not appreciated.”

The Governor seized the opportunity to condole with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Toured Lagbaja, the Nigeria Army and the families of the soldiers who lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident.

However, he reiterated the resolve of the leadership of the people of South East in general and the Governors in particular, not to leave any stone unturned to ensure that the needed peace to develop the region is achieved.

Governor Uzodimma repeated the call on the security agencies to do their job without hindrance and to ensure that those behind the dastardly act are fished out so as to serve as deterrent to others.

On the activities of the perpetrators of the killing, the Governor who described them as criminals said they were propelled by the memory of the past that is still hunting them, noting that, “we should find courage and appreciate the fact that a lot of work had gone into the peace process.”

He maintained that the South East region in general and Imo State in particular crave for peace and advised the people to come out and go about their businesses “without fear of any molestation by anybody.”

He insisted that his government is doing her best in the area of security “and God is supporting and helping us.”

A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled June 13 to hear a suit challenging Abdullahi Ganduje’s position as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court session, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, addressed the North Central APC Forum’s claims against Ganduje’s chairmanship.

The North Central APC Forum, led by Saleh Zazzaga, initiated the legal action, marking the case under reference FHC/ABJ/CS/599/24, citing Ganduje, the APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the first to third defendants, respectively.

The forum’s plea includes a directive for INEC not to recognize any actions undertaken by the APC under Ganduje’s leadership, which began on August 3, 2023. These actions encompass congresses, primaries, and nominations.

The core of the contention is that Ganduje’s occupancy of the APC chairman’s office is deemed unlawful by the forum, as he hails from Kano State in the North West Geopolitical Zone, instead of from a state within the North Central Zone, where his predecessor, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu from Nasarawa State, originated.

The forum argues this appointment violates the APC’s constitution, specifically Article 31.5(1) f, which they claim limits the powers of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) regarding such appointments.

During the session, counsel for the claimant, Ayuba Abdul, was set to proceed with a motion for substituted service of court documents to Ganduje due to difficulties in serving him directly.

However, the presence of Ganduje’s lawyer, Sanusi Musa, SAN, in court suggested readiness to engage with the proceedings, despite the service challenges.

Justice Ekwo encouraged Ganduje’s counsel to handle the process directly and noted that Ishaka Dikko, SAN, representing the APC, submitted a counter affidavit and a preliminary objection.

The court has directed that all applications connected to the suit be filed and responded to before the next hearing.

Supreme Court witness legal showdown as FG, State Governors lock horns over LG Autonomy

The Federal Government of Nigeria and governors representing the 36 states have initiated intense legal confrontations at the Supreme Court concerning the Federal Government’s bid to establish autonomy for the 774 local governments nationwide.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, is spearheading the Federal Government’s legal team in opposition to the state governors, who have retained representation from diverse legal counsels.

Addressing the issues at hand, a seven-man panel of Apex Court justices, chaired by Justice Garba Lawal, initiated the hearing process.

In a remarkable display of generosity, Yusuf Olaolu Ali and Sebastien Hon, distinguished Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), have stepped forward to offer complimentary legal services to support the federal government in the arduous legal battle.

In suit number SC/CV/343/2024, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) is seeking relief from the Supreme Court, requesting an order to restrain State Governors from unilaterally, arbitrarily, and unlawfully dissolving democratically elected local government leaders within their respective states.

In the originating summons personally signed by the Chief Law Officer of the Federation, the Supreme Court is being petitioned for an order allowing the funds held in the credits of local governments to be directly allocated to them from the Federation Account, in accordance with constitutional provisions, rather than through the purported unlawful joint accounts established by governors.

He additionally requested an order from the Apex Court to prohibit governors from forming Caretaker Committees to administer the affairs of local governments, contrary to the constitutionally recognized and guaranteed democratic system.

“Do Awka well so that everyone will come to invest. No one likes to invest in an insecure environment,’’ Umeh said.

Nnamdi Kanu moves to stop trial by Nigerian govt, heads to Appeal Court

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has filed an application at the Appeal Court to stop his trial.

In the appeal filed through his Lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu kicked against his trial by an Abuja Federal High Court presided by Justice Binta Nyako.

A few weeks ago, Ejimakor had declared that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain charges against Kanu.

The Nigerian Government is prosecuting the IPOB leader on terrorism related charges.

In the application filed by Ejimakor at the Court of Appeal, Ejimakor argued, “The Appellant (Nnamdi Kanu) filed this appeal against the Ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division coram: B.F.M Nyako, J. delivered on the 19th March, 2024.

“The said Ruling of the trial court is contained at Pages 42 – 43 of the Record of Appeal; and the Notice of Appeal is at Pages 44-49 of the said Record. The Record of Appeal was transmitted to this Honourable Court on the 16th day of May, 2024. There are three grounds in the Notice of Appeal and the issues argued herein have been distilled from the said three grounds.

“My Lords, Appellant has been in pre-trial detention since June 2021 at the Headquarters of the State Security Services (SSS) in Abuja; and he is currently on trial on a seven-count Charge, some of which are capital offenses punishable by death. On 19th February 2024, the Appellant filed a ‘Notice of Preliminary Objection’ to the jurisdiction of the trial court, pursuant to Section 36(6) (b) and (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and under the inherent jurisdiction of the trial court.

The said Notice of Preliminary Objection was supported by an Affidavit, three Exhibits and a Written Address; and it was brought on the following grounds (See Pages 3 – 24 of the Record of Appeal):

“The Respondent’s act of forcible seizure and photocopying of confidential legal documents brought to the Appellant at the Respondent’s detention facility by his Lawyers, said documents pertaining to facilitating the preparation of Appellant’s defence, amounts to denial of Appellant’s constitutional right to be given adequate facilities for the preparation of his defence and to be defended by legal practitioners of his own choice and is thus a grave violation of Appellant’s constitutional right to Fair Hearing as guaranteed under Section 36(6)(b) & (c)of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Lack of fund stalling Ambassadors’ appointments – Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has attributed the delay in appointing ambassadors to financial and economic challenges being faced by the current administration.

Tuggar disclosed this during the ministerial sectoral briefing on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nigeria has 109 missions, 76 embassies, 22 high commissions and 11 consulates globally.

“The whole idea was to stop subsidising consumption and focus on subsidising production.

“However, the government has faced various other challenges. When the microeconomic reforms began showing benefits, platforms like Binance and the rise of cryptocurrencies began undermining those gains,” Tuggar stated.

According to the minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not been receiving the necessary funding to operate effectively.

He noted that it was pointless to appoint ambassadors without the financial resources to support their travel and the effective running of missions abroad.

“We met a situation where Foreign Affairs was not being funded like the way it should be. Some loopholes are exploited by the likes of Binance. It is a money problem. There is no point sending out ambassadors if you do not have the funds for them to even travel to their designated country and to run the missions effectively, one needs funding,” he said.

Despite these hurdles, Tuggar assured all that the government was addressing the issue. “Mr. President is working on it and it will be done in due course,” he concluded.

On September 2, 2023, President Bola Tinubu recalled all career and non-career ambassadors operating the country’s diplomatic missions, embassies and consulates globally.

The envoys were directed to return to the country on or before October 31. They include the 41 non-career ambassadors and 42 career ambassadors appointed by Former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2020.

The lack of appointed ambassadors has raised concerns about Nigeria’s diplomatic representation and the effectiveness of its foreign missions.

Tuggar explained that upon taking office, Tinubu prioritised the removal of subsidies on consumption to redirect focus towards production subsidies.

Pope tenders apology over reported gay slur

Pope Francis has apologised over his reported use of a gay slur in a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops last week.

A statement from the Vatican said the Pope did not mean to offend anyone and apologised to those who were “hurt by the use of a word”.

“The pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms and he extends his apologies to those who felt offended by the use of a term, reported by others.

During a meeting with more than 250 bishops last week, the 87-year-old pontiff was said to have used an offensive term while expressing his opposition to openly homosexual men joining training colleges for priests, even if they ARE committed to celibacy.

According to two Italian newspapers, Francis said there was already too much “frociaggine” in seminaries, using an offensive Roman term which translates as “faggotry”.

The reports made headlines around the world which sparked reactions from both LGTBQ groups and practising Catholics. Some commentators suggested the Argentine pope did not know what he was saying.

The Vatican statement did not confirm that he used the word but referenced newspaper articles.

“As he had the opportunity to state on several occasions: ‘In the Church, there is room for everyone, everyone! Nobody is useless, nobody is superfluous, and there is space for everyone. Just as we are, all of us,” the statement said.

Labour rejects FG’s fresh N60,000 minimum wage offer

The Organised Labour has rejected a fresh minimum wage proposal by the Nigerian Government.

According to reports, the Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, rejected the offer of the Federal Government to pay N60,000 as new minimum wage.

It was also gathered that labour had shifted grounds from its N497,000 proposal to N494,000.

Our correspondent said a prominent member of the Tripartite Committee for the negotiation of a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers revealed that the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector side of the talks proposed a N60,000 monthly minimum wage as against the N57,000 they tabled last week when the committee resumed negotiations.

It would be recalled that the government had initially proposed N48,000 and N54,000, which were also rejected by Organised Labour.

However, Labour had also presented N615,000 as the new minimum wage but saw reasons to drop their demand from N497,000 last week and then to N494,000 on Tuesday.

The Tripartite Committee is yet to agree on a new minimum wage with three days to the May 31 deadline the labour unions gave to the government.

They also called on the Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodimma, to intervene and bring justice to the family.

According to one of the daughters, of the deceased, Iheoma Opara, who spoke on behalf of her siblings, said the delay to prosecute the suspected officers was to avert justice.

She said: “All we want now is the Federal government, Inspector Generator of Police and Governor of Imo state, Hope Uzodimma, to intervene in the matter and bring justice to us. We are afraid that those blocking the prosecution of the officers involved want to bury the matter.”

Narrating how the incident happened the daughter claimed that their late father, was arrested “On Sunday, October 15, 2023, and when they got the information of the arrest, we quickly rushed to the police the next day with our family relatives, where we met our father hale and hearty. “When we came back on Wednesday, we were shocked when the IPO and team leader notified us that my father who was never sick or suffering from any form of illness the day he was arrested was dead. On further inquiries, both the IPO and team leader informed us that he was at the police clinic but later changed and said his body had already been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre.

“On arrival at the said Federal Medical Centre, we saw the lifeless body of our father, and on a closer observation, discovered that my father’s body had several bruises as well as knife cuts on his neck which were hurriedly stitched either before or after his death.

Tribunal verdict: Diri says victory‘ll propel him to serve Bayelsa better

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has reacted to the verdict of the Bayelsa State Elections Petitions Tribunal which upheld his election as governor, declaring that the victory at the courts will spur him to serve the state better in his second term.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the judgement was delivered by the Justice Adekunle Adeleye-led three-member tribunal, Governor Diri said the petition was a “needless distraction.”

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, the governor noted that by the judgment, the judiciary has again proven that it remained the last hope for the common man.

He said: “Once again, l use this opportunity to thank my people of Bayelsa State who graciously and freely gave me this mandate. lt is not my victory but it is for the people of Bayelsa.

“As l always pledge, our administration is people-focused and people-oriented. So this will again give us a better latitude to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people.

”Describing the judgment as very sound and one of the best that had been delivered in such election petition matters, he said there was still hope for the country.

According to the governor, “Matters like these are mere distractions in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people, particularly against the backdrop that we had an election that was adjudged to be one of the freest and the fairest. And yet we have been distracted over this period. I want to let Bayelsa people of Bayelsa know that we are still for you and will continue to work for you and walk with you until the final day of our administration.” Diri expressed appreciation to his legal team for its commitment and passion and all those who worked hard towards securing a sound judgement.

Responding to a question if he was disposed to working with his political opponents, the governor stressed that his administration would work with only those who have had a change of heart and were interested in collaborating with his Prosperity Government in bringing meaningful development to the state.

“The days where you threaten your own people, chase them out of their own land, intimidate them and go and write results are over. So if they change from those ways, l will work with them.”

In particular, the tribunal chairman described as unprofessional the conduct of the state APC chairman, Chief Dennis Otiotio, for testifying as a witness in the case while being a member of the legal team and for being involved in writing fictitious election results in an attempt to deceive the tribunal. According to the tribunal, Otiotio’s conduct was curious as a legal practitioner.

It also dismissed the allegation that the deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, tendered a forged university certificate and NYSC exemption certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying it was a pre-election matter that ought to be determined by a high court instead.
