The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has identified displacement of people and outbreak of waterborne diseases as potential impacts following heavy rainfall witnessed in some parts of the country.
The agency said there are chances of damage to roads and bridges and flooding. It also disclosed this in its impact-based weather forecast issued on Monday.
The forecast also indicated States that would witness heavy to low rainfall between Tuesday and Thursday this week.
The forecast reads: On Tuesday 16th July (0000-2359hrs), heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Niger, Kebbi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, Gombe, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Abia and Cross River States. For Wednesday, NiMet stated: Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Niger, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Kebbi, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Imo, Abia, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
On Thursday, the agency stated: Moderate to Heavy Rainfall is expected over parts of Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
On the likely impact of the rainfall, it stated: For moderate to heavy rainfall; displacement of people due to floods, outbreaks of waterborne diseases, and damages to infrastructures (roads, bridges,) are expected.)
Some of the hazards predicted during the rainfall include; flash flooding, riverine flooding, soil erosion, thunder, lightning, and strong winds.
