Imo State House of Assembly has passed a vote of implicit confidence on Speaker of the legislative house, Rt. Hon Chike Olemgbe and other Principal Officers of the house over what the house called quality, purposeful, unbiased and well-focused leadership.
Passing the vote of confidence during its well-attended plenary Tuesday, July 3, 2024, the house observed with happiness and satisfaction that since the past one year of existence, the Chike Olemgbe-led legislative house has enjoyed high level cohesion, peace and affection among its members, a situation that made way for high productivity in terms of legislative duties, as well as oversight functions.
The house Tuesday plenary which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the house, Rt Hon Amarachi Chyna Iwuanyanwu further, commended Speaker Chike Olemgbe for being able to carry all members of the house along in the scheme of things, in addition to guiding the state legislative arm to maintain most cordial relationship with the executive arm of government.
The house attributed the fast improving peaceful atmosphere, as well as widespread infrastructural development in the state to the understanding and co-operation among the three arms of government in the state.
Contributing to debate on the motion sponsored by the member for Isu state constituency, Hon Kingsley Ozurumba and seconded by the member for Nkwerre state constituency, Hon Chisom Ojukwu, the members described the Olemgbe-led 10th house of the assembly as a free house that allowed every member express his views without being gagged.
Hon. Barr Ikenna Ihezue of Orlu state constituency noted that good leadership on the part of the house principal officers made the members confident, attentive and responsive to house business and general affairs of the state.
According to the chief sponsor of the motion, Kingsley Ozurumba, the vote of confidence became necessary in view of the fact that Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe in his first year in office as Speaker of the House performed exceedingly well, displaying uncommon capacity and courage in leadership.
The member for Ngor Okpala constituency, Rt. Hon. Obinna Egu on his part, pointed out that since the past one year under the watch of Speaker Chike Olemgbe, the Imo State legislative house entertained many people-oriented bills and motions and, ensured that there was no face-off between the house and the executive arm.
Contributing, Hon Kelechi Ofurum of Owerri North constituency observed with happiness that for one full year, the house remained in one accord, steadily passed people-oriented bills and motions at its plenaries.
Hon. Kelechi Ofurum further, gave kudos to the clerk of the house and head, legislative service, Barr (Mrs) Chinelo Adaora Emeghara, management and staff of the house of assembly for according the lawmakers maximum co-operation in the discharge of their duties.
Hon. Chisom Ojukwu of Nkwerre and Innocent Ikpamezie of Mbaitoli in their submissions, observed that though leadership at any level is not an easy task, Rt. Hon Chike Olemgbe, with his leadership team, has within a short period in office, succeeded in making the legislative house the envy of other states in Nigerian federation.
Other members who spoke in favour of the motion were the member for Ideato State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Johnson Duru, the member for Ehime Mbano, Hon. Bernard Ozoemenam, Hon. Gilbert Nwosu of Oguta state constituency, Hon. Ozioma Ebonine of Njaba, Hon. Udeze of Ideato North, as well as member for Owerri state constituency, Hon Clinton Amadi, who in his contribution, hailed Speaker Chike Olemgbe for taking steps to sanitise the house, stressing that a legislative house is not and should not be seen as a market place where anything happens.
