Stakeholders in education, including the Imo State Commissioner for Secondary and Basic Education, Prof. BTO Ikegwuoha, the Executive Chairman Imo State Universal Basic Education Board (IMSUBEB), Hon. Chidiebere Egboh and member representing Okigwe in IMSUBEB Board, Architect Amaka Onu have applauded Governor Hope Uzodimma and development partners for the ongoing transformation of education in Imo state.
The stakeholders spoke during the official launch of the Nigeria Learning Passport, a digital learning programme, a collaborative project between; UNICEF, Microsoft and Federal Ministry of Education.
In his keynote speech at the event, Imo State Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. B.T.O. Ikegwuoha praised Governor Uzodimma for the massive and unprecedented achievements of his administration in the education sector of Imo State.
He recalled how Governor Uzodimma ebuliently retrieved Ozumba Mbadiwe University (formerly Eastern Palm University, Ogboko, which was built by Imo’s common wealth, but appropriated by an individual, as his private estate.
He also recalled the transformation of Imo State College of Education, Ihitte/Uboma (now Benjamin Uwajumogu College of Education) which was on the verge of comatose, as well as the establishment of new tertiary institutions and upgrade of other existing ones in the state.
He said the governor has attracted some educational bodies, meant for South East to be established in Imo State, including the Nigeria Teachers Training Institute.
He disclosed that under his watch, the Imo State Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has been digitised, while promising to do everything possible to make Imo students get the best education.
In his address, the Executive Chairman, Imo State Universal Education Board (IMSUBEB), Hon. Chidiebere Egboh said the programme is all about digital learning, that the first face will involve one hundred (100) schools from across Imo State, disclosing that the promoters have trained teachers and staff who will in turn train others, adding that the organisers will provide laptops, palmtops for easy access to the online studies which comprises all the subjects in the sillabus.
The Executive Chairman pointed out that Imo State Universal Basic Education Board (IMSUBEB) under his watch, with the approval and unreserved support of the Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma had already started digitalizing education in the state, before the arrival of the NLP programme in the state.
“The state government had procured interactive Boards, we have concluded arrangements to kick off smart schools in every local government (3 schools per local government), we are already building 105 brand new schools.
“All these, together with the digital apparatus the state government has procured and the ones being expected, will enhance education”.
He clarified that the programme will not replace or displace the normal classroom learning, but rather it will enhance it.
“We are going to bring stakeholders; teachers, P.Gs, traditional rulers, Councillors, LG Chairmen to buy into the programme. We had already told them to take charge, it’s now left for them as stakeholders to put electricity and security. Any school that is secured and have electricity, we will digitalize it. As government is contributing, communities also have to contribute, Egboh submitted”.
Speaking, the member representing Okigwe in the Imo State Universal Education Board (IMSUBEB), Architect Mrs Amaka Onu described NLP as a new era for innovative digital learning for Imo’s younger children in the basic schools.
She said the programme will enable the pupils to access Nigeria and British curriculum through the internet, as Imo State government is providing access to digital learning for pupils in the state by providing routers, laptops, computers and data for effective teaching and learning.
Mrs Onu said the state government was intensively training teachers for smooth running of the programme.
