The lawmaker representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mascot Ikwechegh, has officially defected to the Labour Party days after leaving the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Ikwechegh had earlier stepped down from APGA alongside some party executives in Aba.

On Tuesday, he confirmed that he is now a member of the Labour Party, putting an end to days of speculation about his next political step.

Soon after declaring his new political home, the federal lawmaker visited Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.

The meeting was held behind closed doors, and details were not made public.

The development comes amid reactions from the state chapter of APGA.

The party’s chairman in Abia, Sunday Onukwubiri, had earlier stated that the party’s office in Umuahia was not formally informed about Ikwechegh’s resignation.

He maintained that the party would remain united and peaceful despite the departure of any member.
