Imo State House of Assembly has passed a motion to direct the state Ministry of Livestock Development to revamp the abandoned Imo state Songhai farm located at Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area in order to ensure food security in the state.
The House took the resolution following a motion moved by the member representing Ohaji /Egbema state Constituency, Hon Uzoma Francis Osuoha
Hon Osuoha while presenting the motion said that the gesture will boost the food security and create employment opportunities for Imo indigenes.
Osuoha noted that the Songhai Farm was established in 2004 with intent to force down the price of food stuff for imolites and the nation at large.
According to him, the Songhai Farm which comprises of Livestock, fishery, animal husbandry and farming was a very huge success and lived to its expectations of providing food security and gainful employment as at then.
The lawmaker pointed out the revamp of the Songhai farm will geared towards being a source of succor for Imolites especially during this trying period because it sales at a reduce price considering the high cost of food stuff and its resultant effect on the lives of Imolites.
He regretted that the Songhai Farm presently has been a shadow of itself hence erosion has taken over almost half of its land marks.
He stressed the need for the Ministry of Livestock Development to collaborate with National Agricultural Land Development Authority to ensure that Imo state Songhai farm is brought back to its glory or its original plan so that Imolites can smile again.
