The EFCC has begun its case against the suspended Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in an FCT High Court in Abuja. The charges included criminal conspiracy, conferring undue advantage, and breach of trust, among others, to which Emefiele pleaded not guilty.
Onyeka Ogbu, a Deputy Director in CBN branch operations, testified as the EFCC’s First Witness, stating that 6.2 million dollars was set aside for international election observers. He mentioned a request for payment of 6.2 million dollars and confirmed that it was processed and disbursed according to the documents.
The defense lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, disagreed with the prosecution’s request for more time and advocated for an adjournment for the prosecution to obtain Certified True Copies and for the witness to undergo cross-examination.
The amended charges alleged that Emefiele forged a document and conspired to obtain $6.2m from the CBN. The EFCC also accused him of awarding a contract for the renovation of the CBN Governor’s lodge to a company in which he and another individual are directors and majority shareholders.
The case is set to continue on the next trial date.
