The Imo State chairman, Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Hon. (Dr.) Samuel Ude has made some clarifications over the duration of his tenure in office. This clarifications was on the backdrop of some conflicting reports in the media about the expiration of his tenure.

Fielding questions from a cross section of newsmen who called on him for the clarification, Ude made it clear that his present tenure which kick-started from November 30, 2023, will elapse in November 2027.

In the said publication, which the authors attributed to the result of an investigation, it was stated that the tenure of Ude will elapse on September 7, this year (2024), when he is expected to hand over to his successor, having been handed over by his predecessor, on September 7, 2021, as the report alleged that the duration of leadership in the union is three years.

Meanwhile Ambassador Udewho described those peddling the rumour and propaganda as faceless individuals, who could not master the courage to mention their names in the what he called fabricated report, explained that he was first appointed by the Governor on September 16, 2021 when the first person appointed was removed, while he assumed office on September 21 of same year.

He informed newsmen that he was found worthy by the national body of the union and elected a national Trustee of the union in 2023, and on November 30 of same year (2023), the state chapter also reelected him as the state chairman of the union, for a four year second tenure ending November 2027.

He made it clear that NURTW is a national formation comprising the 36 states and Abuja and that election in all the state chapters are conducted simultaneously, same day across the country, without minding state chairmen who may not have stayed up to four years, like in his own case.

Ambassador Ude further made it clear that NURTW is an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), as a trade union, with a renewal tenure of four years.

He disclosed that the administration before the present government led by Senator Hope Uzodimma in Imo State changed the process of ascending to the leadership in the state, from election to appointment.

The chairman said his tenure has witnessed a lot of transformation in the annals of the union, positioning their members as respectable members of the society.

He appreciated the magnanimity of Governor Hope Uzodimma to the union, more especially for constructing quality roads, making it possible for their members to have seamless and hitch free driving on the roads, thereby saving them the expenses of constantly repairing their vehicles.

He added that the Governor has given them a pride of place in the society, whereby they are no longer regarded as “touts”, adding that the Governor gave them five slots for all expenses paid pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Israel and Jordan, gave some of his members appointment as GLOs, among numerous largesse and recognition being extended to them by the governor.

Adding his voice, Dr. Ajunwa Paul, the Political Adviser to the National Union, Imo State chapter, said the union in the state was fortunate to have a personality of Ude, who is a National Trustee as its chairman, as according to him Ude has given the National Union a new face in Imo State.

Other executive and members of the union who fielded questions from our correspondent, including; Hon. AnayoIkechukwu, Chief OdinakaOsuji, Comrade Dominic NdubuisiAnuforo, Elder Timothy Agu, among others, eulogized Ude for what they described as his transformative leadership. They affirmed that the current executive of the union led by Ude just commenced its second tenure from November 2023, to end by November, 2027.

Some of them being elderly and long serving members of the union, attested that since the inception of the union, they have never had a leadership as good as the present one led by Ambassador Ude. They went further to describe him as honest leader who has instilled great level of unity in the union, and more importantly making them to work in tandem with the Governor and State Government.
