The State Commissioner for Water Resources, Ozo Obinna Ogwuegbu has led a top management of the Water Sanitation And Hygiene (WASH) sector to have important meeting with the Vice Chancellor of Imo State University (IMSU) Prof U.U Chukwumaeze.
The crucial meeting followed the directive by the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, to the effect that safe and well managed Water Sanitation and Hygiene services should be provided for Imo residents. This was contained in a statement issued by Christopher Ononukwe.
According to the statement, the management of the WASH sector includes; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources , Mrs Nnenna Nwugo, the SPIU Coordinator on SURWASH, Engr Chizoba Udegbe, the Acting Managing Director of Imo State Water And Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC), Engr Peter Chukwuma.
The discussion, which took place at the University Senate Complex was to seek the support of the University, as one of the key stakeholders on the ongoing rehabilitation of the IMSU Water Scheme, and to ensure that the University community continues to have improved access to safely managed water.
In his speech, Ogwuegbu said that IMSU Water Scheme and the mini-treatment plant were very crucial, adding that the better access to WASH service is necessary for the health and well-being of the students, staff and other residents of the University.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Chukwumaeze expressed gratitude to the the Commissioner for the visit and pledged to provide necessary support, in order to ensure that the SURWASH project , located at the University, is reactivated successfully.
He ordered his staff, led by the Director of Works and Physical Planning, to work with the state government to ensure that the University community receives enough WASH services from state government.
In a related development , the Commissioner carried out a routine audit of the Otamiri waterworks in line with the state government’s commitment to public health and water quality.
The raw water abstraction section, generator house and chemical house, were thoroughly audited, as part of government ongoing efforts to guarantee operational effectiveness and disaster management.
The Commissioner made a number of observations and made recommendations to improve the operations of all the facilities, especially, in light of the recent cholera outbreak in some parts of the country.
He directed the Acting Managing Director of ISWSC, EngrChukwuma, to take necessary steps to procure extra chemicals required for water treatment, in an effort to prevent any cholera outbreak.
He emphasized that all treatments must continue to follow Nigeria’s standard for drinking water quality and World Health Organization (WHO) standards.
In order to guarantee steady power availability , the Commissioner also reached out to the Network Manager of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company ( EEDC) in Owerri, as part of his audit of the ongoing power supply challenges that ISWSC facilities are facing.
