A Non-Governmental Organization, “Center for Right to Health” will today, Thursday, June 27, premier a documentary on the life experiences of women with disabilities who had been Victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV ) in Imo State.
The Executive Director of the NGO, Dr Stella Iwuagwu disclosed this during a Press Conference, in Owerri.
According to her, the NGO was implementing the project aimed at building the capacity of persons with disability and women’s rights organization, and engage cultural and religious leaders in order to prevent Gender Based Violence against Women in Imo State.
Dr. Iwuagwu who is a public health professional, explained that women were more vulnerable than men in this regard, adding that women were more affected due to intersectionality and multiple layers of vulnerability including religion, culture , access to education, economic securities, etc.
She emphasized the need to prioritize the prevention Gender Based Violence among women with disabilities, noting that GBV has profound and lasting effects on women with disabilities, including life long stigma , discrimination, economic deprivations and increased vulnerability to more violence.
Dr. Iwuagwu identified hunger, loneliness and isolation as some of the factors that increase the vulnerability, and called on government, cultural and religious leaders, as well as the media to help and amplify the voices of persons with disability.
Also speaking, the programme manager of the “Center for Right to Health”, Mr. Bid Eziefule who was present at the briefing said the Traditional Ruler of Oguta, Igwe Nani Chinedu Nzeribe will be the chairman of the occasion while the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Egbu, Rt. Rev. Geoffrey Okoroafor will deliver the keynote address.
