The family of Odoh Ocheme, a former aide to embattled ex governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has raised alarm over what it alleged as “political persecution and harassment of the family by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede.”
In a statement signed by the family lawyer and foremost human right activist, Barr. Abang, the family alleged that operatives of the EFCC “stormed the Odoh house in Makurdi with the excuse they are searching for what they failed to explain to the family.
The statement explained that the operatives “broke into the odoh premises without identification and mercilessly beat up the security guard and one other worker who were in the compound.”It alleged that “These two persons are now in the hospital receiving treatment for nothing more than asking them who they were when they arrived.”Abang further accused the EFCC of “making death threats against the Ochemes and their children, Eric and her younger sister as well as threatening to go to Owerri from Makurdi to harass the father in law of Eric, her son.
The men marked all property they could link to the family, including inherited property of the family and her house which has not been improved since her son became an aide of Emefiele.
The lawyer wondered how the EFCC could be acting in such Gestapo manner when from everything they have said and produced there is nothing directly linking her son to any of the crimes they alleged against him.
“His only crime is that he worked for Emefiele, and I believe that is not a crime” she stated. The family lawyer called on President Tinubu to direct the EFCC Chairman to follow the law at all times as the family believes that Eric their son is in clear danger of losing his life.
The mother, Madam Odoh, who was crying uncontrollably added that she was already very afraid that her son would be killed, judging by the threats the men made and said no old mother should ever be made to go through the agony they have put her through by promising the untimely death of her son when they attacked their family house,” she added.
