The President of the Court of Appeal (PCA), Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, has urged foreign nations to ensure the prompt repatriation of recovered looted assets in their custody to victim countries.
Justice Dongban-Mensem said this practice will ensure justice for victim nations whose assets were unjustly looted and warehoused in foreign custody, noting that without prompt repatriation, the promise of justice remains unfulfilled.
The PCA made this point while speaking at the 43rd Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime, held at the University of Cambridge, England.
Justice Dongban-Mensem, who gave the vote of thanks at the event, where Nigeria’s Judiciary, law enforcement agencies and financial regulators were prominently represented, warned that illicit wealth must not continue to fund further crimes, confer influence or encourage impunity. According to a statement by the Assistant Chief Information Officer at the Court of Appeal, Bukola Garr, the PCA noted that economic crime is not merely a financial problem but a question of social justice.
Justice Dongban-Mensem said stolen resources deprive societies of opportunities and weaken public confidence.
She noted that a key takeaway from the symposium was the need for persistence, courage, and collaboration to make “the financial foundations of criminal enterprises increasingly difficult to sustain.”
The PCA said Nigeria’s delegation reflected the country’s commitment to fighting economic crime through “institutional collaboration and international cooperation.”
She thanked the symposium’s founder, Professor Barry Rider (OBE), and the University of Cambridge and Jesus College for hosting the event, held between August 24 and 31.
