The good people of Umuhu autonomous community in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, have celebrated their 2026 annual New Yam Festival with their friends and in-laws on Tuesday August 25, expressing gratitude to God for making them to witness this year’s occasion.
Speaking at his palace, the Uhu ii of Umuhu autonomous Community, Eze Basil Obinna Anyanwu, appreciated the people of the community for conducting themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner, noting that he is delighted and satisfied.
He expressed overwhelming joy that the event went smoothly and peacefully as it was planned, describing it as the work of God. He equally appreciated all the guests for coming to celebrate with them, and prayed God to bless them all.
Eze Anyanwu disclosed that the Iri Ji festival is an annual event, and an event that brings together the sons and daughters of the community, as well as their in-laws, friends and well-wishers, adding that the festival is not only for him and his cabinet, neither is it for only the President-General (PG) and his team, but for the entire members of the community. He urged them not to miss out on any Iri Ji festival.
The traditional ruler further disclosed that in the olden days, the Iri Ji festival was called Ahiajoku by their forefathers, but today, it has been baptized, and they now call it “New Yam Festival.” He went on to note that the festival started many years ago by their forefathers, who handed it over to them. He admonished his people not to toy with it, and wished them happy celebration.
Adding his voice, the PG of the community, Hon Valentine Nwaimo, expressed happiness that everything went well, and thanked the traditional ruler for his leadership style.
He equally appreciated the people of Umuhu for being law abiding before and during the occasion, as he encouraged them to continue being law abiding and their brother’s keepers.
Hon. Nwaimo went on to appreciate their guests for gracing the occasion, and notified them that on 31st of December, the community will be celebrating its cultural festival, inviting them for the event, while promising that the occasion would be a talk of the town.
The P.G.passionately called on all the people of the community to go into farming, so there would always be food on the table for everyone, and so as to reduce poverty and unemployment.
“Everybody should go into farming, and let’s do it in a bigger way like our forefathers”, he admonished.
The PG made it known to them that some of the millionaires today are farmers, urging them to forget about white collar jobs, but engage in one trade or the other, and become entrepreneurs. He noted that looking for white collar jobs in Nigeria nowadays, is like looking for fish inside desert.
