As Food prices and other commodities continue to soar with harsh Economic realities, Imo State House of Assembly has passed a Motion, urging the Governor, Hope Uzodimma to immediately direct the Ministry of Education to ensure Demonstration Farms are restarted in various Primary and Secondary Schools in the State.

They also agreed to urge the Governor to direct the Ministry of  Agriculture to immediately interface with the Local Farmers across the State, and seek ways to improve on farming, and providing necessary logistics to them, such as Grant, Seedlings, Manure among others
Other Prayers of the Motion, chiefly sponsored by the member representing Nkwerre State Constituency, Hon. Chisom Ojukwu include; to urge Governor Uzodimma to reactivate Imo Marketing Board, to ensure the continued support to Imo Residents through storage and distribution of food items and commodities, in order to increase Food Reserve and ultimately alleviate the suffering of Imo people .

They also urged the Governor to direct the relevant Agencies and Ministries to look into the Rubber Plantations in Imo State, in order to ensure they are working optimally to increase production, as this would boost employment, and generate more Revenue for the State, as well as facilitate the revamping of Avutu Poultry in Obowo because these are some of the ways to prioritize Agriculture in Imo State.

Meanwhile, earlier presenting the Motion, Hon. Ojukwu observed that the lacuna created in not participating in Agriculture and farming gave room for most of the Agricultural and Farm Produce to be imported into the State from other parts of the country, positing that it resulted in high cost of  food items with it antecedent landing cost.

He called on the State Government to immediately intervene by making Agriculture, a priority and avert  catastrophic consequences,  which may lead to wide spread famine, diseases and societal collapse.

“The Global Food Crisis cannot be over emphasized. Our Schools need to return to their Demonstration Farms, while our families should be encouraged to have farm at the backyards. Farmers need grants and seedlings, to make headway”.

Hon.  Ojukwu stated, and expressed worry that unprecedented high cost of food items in the State, as well as obvious lack of interest in Agriculture and farming by Teachers and Students has made it imperative for Governor Uzodimma’s immediate Intervention by ensuring that Agriculture was made a priority to avert catastrophic consequences.

Uche Francis Agabige, enjoyed the support of; Hon Uche Agabige, member representing Orsu State Constituency, Hon Chigozie Nwaneri member representing Oru-East State Constituency, Hon Henry Agbasonu member representing Ezinihitte Mbaise State Constituency, Hon Okey Udeze member representing Ideato North State Constituency, Hon.
