The police command in Abia on Sunday arrested a woman, Gift Nwoko, residing at IBB Housing Estate in Umuahia, for the attempted murder of a girl, Chimamanda Ebo.
The command’s spokeswoman, Maureen Chinaka, announced this in a statement on Monday. Ms Chinaka said a preliminary investigation revealed that Ms Nwoko, 35, from Ehime-Mbano in Imo, was an aunt to Miss Ebo, 12.
According to the police, Ms Nwoko, who had been living with Miss Ebo, attempted to kill her on Sunday for failing to spread clothes outside to dry as she had directed before going out.
The police alleged that Ms Nwoko repeatedly beat and threatened to kill the girl.
“Operatives from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters, Umuahia, raced to the scene leveraging on actionable intelligence. They rescued the victim, apprehended the suspect, and recovered the exhibit knife,” the police statement said.
The command’s spokeswoman explained that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and the suspect would be charged with attempted murder upon the conclusion of the investigation.
